Linking herbivory and ecosystem services in urban forests

Trends in Plant Science, 2023
Urban forests provide important benefits for humans. Species interactions, in particular herbivory, can alter their function and ultimately threaten their ecosystem service provisioning. We call for research that identifies herbivory drivers in urban forests and tests for links between herbivory and forest services.

Forest-Related Ecosystem Services

2016
Forests are a crucial element not only of landscapes but also of human living conditions. Covering nearly a third of the earth's land surtace, they stabilize surface soil, prevent erosion and play an essential role in water resource management at the watershed and local levels. They regulate climate and improve air quality. At the same time they are an

Ecosystem services in Swedish forests

Scandinavian Journal of Forest Research, 2016
ABSTRACTWe identify, describe qualitatively, quantify biophysically and, if possible, monetarily valuate the most important ecosystem services in Swedish forests. Existing Swedish and Nordic research and statistics within this area are reviewed and used to develop a first framework for the valuation of ecosystem services in Swedish forests. We base our

Forest Ecosystem Services and Biodiversity

2020
Ecosystems, and the biodiversity and services they support, are intrinsically dependent on climate. During the twentieth century, climate change has had documented impacts on ecological systems, and impacts are expected to increase as climate change continues and perhaps even accelerates.

Forest ecosystem services of Changbai Mountain in China

Science in China Series C, 2002
The forest ecosystem of the Changbai Mountain is the most typical upland temperate forest ecosystem in eastern Asia. It is also of the most primitive vegetation type that came into being through the natural succession of soil and vegetation following volcanic eruption.

Biodiversity and ecosystem services in forest ecosystems: a research agenda for applied forest ecology

Journal of Applied Ecology, 2016
Summary Given the substantial contributions of forest biodiversity and ecosystem services to society, forest sciences have a large potential to contribute to the integrity and sustainability of our future. This is especially true when the roles of biodiversity for sustaining ecosystem services are considered.

Valuing Forest Ecosystem Services in Portugal

2022
The national literature on forest ecosystem valuation is scarce and little is known about how important the valuation of forest ecosystem services and their internalization in low density regions of Portugal are. Hence, there is a need for technicians, academics, and researchers to mitigate this knowledge gap through further research in this area.

Monitoring Changes in Ecosystem Services Within a Forest Ecosystem

2014
The importance of ecosystem services has been widely accepted since the publication of both the United Nations 2005 Millennium Ecosystem Assessment and The Economics of Ecosystems and Biodiversity, which assess future scenarios with and without ecosystem services, respectively. To sustainably maintain ecosystem services, assessment of the current state

Forest Ecosystem Services for Human Health

2021
This chapter reviews researches showing the great potential of non-timber use of forest products, in particular needles, bark, wood, and cones from conifer species, which are especially rich of essential micronutrients and could substantially contribute to their adequate intake in the human diet.

Ecosystem Services with Diverse Forest Landowners

2017
Pacific Northwest moist coniferous forests provide a wide array of globally important goods and services, including water, carbon sequestration, wood products, fish and wildlife habitat, cultural values, and world-class recreation. These forests are owned and managed by a mix of public, private, and tribal landowners (plates 6, 7), however, who often ...
