This chapter explores how a “natural” process generates dynamically something that is conceptually similar to a percolation cluster by using the case of forest fires. It first provides an overview of the forest-fire model, which is essentially a probabilistic cellular automata, before discussing its numerical implementation using the Python code.

Turkey has a high forest fire potential along the Aegean and Mediterranean coasts, related to climate and extremely sensitive forests. In Turkey over 10,000-ha forest area has been destroyed every year and inevitable damage has been revealed.

Summary Forested environments are subject to large and high intensity unplanned fire events, owing to, among other factors, the high quantity and complex structure of fuel in these environments.

Are the effects of fire good or bad for Earth9s ecosystems? The weight of the evidence is tilting toward the bad side, as explained by Goldammer in his Perspective. He describes the need for precise data to assess fire9s effects--such as that provided in two recent studies of the negative influence of fire in tropical rainforests (one,

Global rise in forest fire emissions linked to climate change in the extratropics
ScienceClimate change increases fire-favorable weather in forests, but fire trends are also affected by multiple other controlling factors that are difficult to untangle.

Image Processing Based Forest Fire Detection
arXiv.orgA novel approach for forest fire detection using image processing technique is proposed. A rule based color model for fire pixel classification is used. The proposed algorithm uses RGB and YCbCr color space.

Forest fires and the danger to fire-fighters
2007In the last decade the problem of forest fires in Italy has been characterized by alternation of a great interest in the subject followed by a year of reduced interest. In 1988 there were 13 500 fires affecting an area of 186 000 hectares, 60 000 of which were woodland. The average area of each fire was 14 ha, i.e.

Fuzzy-metaheuristic ensembles for spatial assessment of forest fire susceptibility.
Journal of Environmental Management, 2020Forests are important dynamic systems which are widely affected by fire worldwide. Due to the complexity and non-linearity of the forest fire problem, employing hybrid evolutionary algorithms is a logical task to achieve a reliable approximation of this ...

How destructive or beneficial are forest fires to wildlife? Should we be trying to reduce or increase the amount of fire in forests? How are forest fires controlled, and why does this sometimes fail? What effect will climate change have? These and many other questions are answered in this richly illustrated book, written in non-technical language.
