Characterization of wildland-urban interfaces for fire prevention in the province of Valencia (Spain)

open access: yesForest Systems, 2013
Aim of study. The present study is the first attempt to characterize and map wildland-urban interfaces (WUIs) in eastern Spain (province of Valencia) and its relationship with wildfire occurrence. Area of study. The study area is located in eastern Spain

Incorporating Short-Term Forecast Mean Winds and NWP Maximum Gusts into Effective Wind Speed for Extreme Weather-Aware Wildfire Spread Prediction

open access: yesFire
Because wildfire spread is strongly influenced by instantaneous gusts, models that use only mean wind speed typically underestimate spread. In contrast, incorporating suppression effects often leads to overestimation.

Reproduction of Smaller Wildfire Perimeters Observed by Polar-Orbiting Satellites Using ROS Adjustment Factors and Wildfire Spread Simulators

open access: yesRemote Sensing
While geostationary satellites can provide continuous near-real-time observations, their low spatial resolution makes it difficult to detect small wildfires.

Harnessing Fungal Biowelding for Constructing Mycelium‐Engineered Materials

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Mycelium‐bound composites (MBCs) offer low‐carbon alternatives for construction, yet interfacial bonding remains a critical challenge. This review examines fungal biowelding as a biocompatible adhesive, elucidating mycelium‐mediated interfacial mechanisms and their role in material assembly. Strategies to optimize biowelding are discussed, highlighting

An Experimental Study of Intermittent Heating Frequencies From Wind-Driven Flames

open access: yesFrontiers in Mechanical Engineering, 2019
An experimental study was conducted to understand the intermittent heating behavior downstream of a gaseous line burner under forced flow conditions. While previous studies have addressed time-averaged properties, here measurements of the flame location ...

A Termite‐Inspired Alternative to Cement

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A termite‐inspired composite of clay, cellulose, and lignin forms a dense fibrous network with concrete‐like strength (32 MPa) and superior elasticity, processed at ambient temperature. Abstract Clay combined with organic materials is used by termites as a strong and durable construction material for their mounds with minimal environmental impact. Here,

Assembling and Customizing Multiple Fire Weather Forecasts for Burn Probability and Other Fire Management Applications in Ontario, Canada

open access: yesFire, 2020
Weather forecasts are needed in fire management to support risk-based decision-making that considers both the probability of an outcome and its potential impact.

Designing Asymmetric Memristive Behavior in Proton Mixed Conductors for Neuromorphic Applications

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Protonic devices that couple ionic and electronic transport are demonstrated as bioinspired neuromorphic elements. The devices exhibit rubber‐like asymmetric memristive behavior with slow voltage‐driven conductance increase and rapid relaxation, enabling simplified read–write operation.
