Comparison of energy-wood and pulpwood thinning systems in young birch stands [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
In early thinnings, a profitable alternative to pulpwood could be to harvest whole trees as energy-wood. In theoretical analyses, we compared the extractible volumes of energy-wood and pulpwood, and their respective gross values in differently aged ...

Comparison of the gravimetric sampling and impedance methods for measuring soil moisture content

open access: yesMetsanduslikud Uurimused, 2015
This paper was focused on determining whether gravimetric sampling and impedance method of measuring soil moisture content provided different results and if they did, what was the size of the differences between particular methods on rendzinas and ...

Productivity of a John Deere Harvester Unit in Deciduous Stands

open access: yesActa Universitatis Agriculturae et Silviculturae Mendelianae Brunensis, 2014
The aim of the presented paper was to determine the productivity of a John Deere 1070D harvester in deciduous coppices of Quercus petraea and Fagus sylvatica, in thinnings over 50 years of age.

Role of non-wood forest products for local livelihoods in countries with transition and market economies: case studies in Ukraine and Sweden [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
The role of non-wood forest products (NWFPs) in local economies differ in time and space. We analysed Ukrainian and Swedish national policies and management rules related to the use of NWFPs, and described how different forest stakeholders utilised NWFPs

Choosing the right close-range technology for measuring DBH in fast-growing trees plantations

open access: yesTrees, Forests and People
Recently, the cultivation of fast-growing tree (FGT) plantations has gained importance due to the growing energy and climate crisis. FGT plantations have the potential to reduce carbon footprints and lower greenhouse gas emissions by utilization of local

Impact of Structural Defects on the Surface Quality of Hardwood Species Sliced Veneers

open access: yesApplied Sciences, 2020
The surface roughness constitutes one of the most critical properties of wood and wood veneers for their extended utilization, affecting the bonding ability of the veneers with one another in the manufacturing of wood composites, the finishing, coating ...

Assessing feasibility of the forest trafficability map for avoiding rutting - a case study [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Information on forest trafficability (i.e. carrying capacity of the forest floor) is required before harvesting operations in Southern Boreal forest conditions.

Interactions of Forest Road, Forest Harvesting and Forest Ecosystems [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Forestry developed with the goal, ultimately, of maximizing the long-term economic return from the forest, a goal that has remained virtually unchanged to the present day, despite the growth in understanding of ecosystem function (Farrell et al. 2000).

Large‐scale bidirectional arrayed genetic screens identify OXR1 and EMC4 as modifiers of αSynuclein aggregation

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Activation of the mitochondrial protein OXR1 increases pSyn129 αSynuclein aggregation by lowering ATP levels and altering mitochondrial membrane potential, particularly in response to MSA‐derived fibrils. In contrast, ablation of the ER protein EMC4 enhances autophagic flux and lysosomal clearance, broadly reducing α‐synuclein aggregates.
