Principles of Forest Hydrology

open access: yesEos, Transactions American Geophysical Union, 1983
Principles of Forest Hydrology has been written to accompany class lectures for students pursuing training in forestry, wildland resources, environmental sciences, and geography. The book introduces basic principles and concepts of hydrology and it does this quite well.Principles of Forest Hydrology is a revision of an earlier book, An Outline of ...

Regional assessment of groundwater recharge in the lower Mekong Basin [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Groundwater recharge remains almost totally unknown across the Mekong River Basin, hindering the evaluation of groundwater potential for irrigation. A regional regression model was developed to map groundwater recharge across the Lower Mekong Basin where

Simulating controlled drainage and hydrological connections in a cultivated peatland field

open access: yesVadose Zone Journal
Cultivated peatlands are increasingly regarded as hot spots due to climate change and other environmental concerns. Flexible water management, such as controlled drainage, is proposed to optimize cultivation and reduce environmental risks in peatland ...

Hydrological Conditions Outweigh Soil Texture, Temperature, and Terrain in German Agricultural Land Use

open access: yesJournal of Plant Nutrition and Soil Science, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Background The availability of fertile land suitable for agriculture is limited. In the European Union, political demand for self‐sufficiency in staple food production currently competes with increasing ambitions for nature restoration and green energy. Meanwhile, the overall agricultural area shrinks due to land sealing.

History, origins and importance of temporary ponds [PDF]

open access: yes, 2001
In Europe, temporary ponds are a naturally common and widespread habitat occurring, often in abundance, in all biogeographical regions from the boreal snow-melt pools of northern Scandinavia to the seasonally inundated coastal dune pools of southern ...

Nitrogen dynamics in the shallow groundwater of a riparian wetland zone of the Garonne, SW France: nitrate inputs, bacterial densities, organic matter supply and denitrification measurements [PDF]

open access: yes, 2003
This study highlights the role of interactions between surface and sub-surface water of the riparian zone of a large river (the Garonne, SW France). Information is given about the role of surface water in supplying Dissolved Organic Carbon (DOC ) to the

Holocene sea‐level and environmental changes on the Isle of Mull, Scotland

open access: yesJournal of Quaternary Science, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Sea‐level and coastal changes are reconstructed on the Isle of Mull, western Scotland, from 10 988 to 10 507 cal BP to the present. This research has produced the first SLIP for the Isle of Mull. A multiproxy approach including pollen, spore, foraminifera and diatom analyses reveals palaeoenvironmental changes from two coastal sites.

Decoupling climate and human impacts on the nitrogen cycle during the Irish Bronze Age

open access: yesJournal of Quaternary Science, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Disentangling climate variability and human activity in past nitrogen cycling is key to understanding ecosystems. Previous studies in Ireland observed a widespread, permanent shift in terrestrial nitrogen cycling during Later Prehistory, potentially linked to intensifying land‐use.
