Commentary: Forest Plantations

Environment: Science and Policy for Sustainable Development, 1998
Abstract Roger Sedjo and Daniel Botkin suggest in their article “Using Forest Plantations to Spare Natural Forests” (December), that trends toward increased commodity wood production in intensively managed plantations might take the pressure off natural forests.

Mixed Forest Plantations

2018
Forest plantations have become increasingly important worldwide. Whereas the global forest area is reduced every year, the establishment of forest plantations is experiencing a notable increase in the last decades. This trend also brings an increase in the dependence of society on forest plantations to obtain both timber and non-timber services ...

Why Mixed Forest Plantation?

2020
Tropical forest plantations in monoculture are simple ecosystems much less complex than natural tropical forests with hundreds of tree species. The simplification allows concentrating the site resources for genetic material of interest reducing silvicultural treatments.

Mangrove Forest and Plantation

2020
Mangroves, which were once considered wastelands, are being increasingly recognized for their ecological services that they perform as inshore stabilization, protection from cyclones/storms/tsunami, home to marine biodiversity, etc. Mangroves prosper in warm tropical regions. More than 40% of world mangroves are found in Asia. Mangrove forests in India

Growing Plantation Forests

2014
This book describes the scientific principles that are used throughout the world to ensure the rapid, healthy growth of forest plantations. As the population of the world increases so does the amount of wood people use. Large areas of natural forests are being cleared every year and converted to other uses. Almost as large an area of plantation forests

Why Forest Plantations Fail

Journal of Forestry, 1939
Abstract An understanding of the causes of plantation failures is necessary if there is to be improvement in the large-scale reforestation work now underway in the Lake States. This paper presents an analysis of plantation mortality based on a resurvey of older plantations throughout the regionand a special study made on the Huron ...

Inventory of Forest Plantations

2013
We review the research related to the application of inventory techniques utilizing airborne laser scanning (ALS) in intensively managed forest plantations. The single tree detection and area based methods originally developed in more complex forest types were found to be no less effective in plantation forests for the estimation of important stand ...

Forest Plantations in Northern Minnesota

Journal of Forestry, 1946
Abstract A study by the author of coniferous plantations in northern Minnesota showed that they are usually successful in old fields, on recent severe burns, and on brush-free sandy soils. Deer and rabbits do much damage, but hazel brush is the most difficult factor with which the planter has to contend.
