1999Abstract Past and continuing destruction of natural forests in the tropics have made forest plantations desirable and often necessary. Tropical forests have long been cleared for other uses or severely damaged by human use. This destruction shows few signs of abating.

Forest Plantations in Puerto Rico
1995Many facets of forest plantation establishment and management have been explored during the 50-year history of the Institute of Tropical Forestry. Little was known until recently about the extent and nature of forest plantations in Puerto Rico. About 4000 ha of plantations located largely on state and federal lands have been noted.
