Monitoring ecological recovery of reclaimed wellsites: Protocols for quantifying recovery on forested lands

open access: yesMethodsX, 2019
We developed a scientifically robust and financially sustainable monitoring protocol to enable a consistent assessment of ecological recovery of physical, chemical, and biological indicators at certified reclaimed industrial wellsites in forested lands in noutheastern Alberta.

Individuals With Multijoint Osteoarthritis Demonstrate Larger Longitudinal Declines in Frailty: Data From the Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging

open access: yesArthritis Care &Research, EarlyView.
Objective The aim of this study was to test the hypothesis that multijoint osteoarthritis would modify the relation between time and frailty progression, in which more affected joints would lead to larger declines over six years compared to those without osteoarthritis using data from the Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging.

Competition and Burn Severity Determine Post-Fire Sapling Recovery in a Nationally Protected Boreal Forest of China: An Analysis from Very High-Resolution Satellite Imagery

open access: yesRemote Sensing, 2019
Anticipating how boreal forest landscapes will change in response to changing fire regime requires disentangling the effects of various spatial controls on the recovery process of tree saplings.

The role of terrain-mediated hydroclimate in vegetation recovery after wildfire

open access: yesEnvironmental Research Letters, 2023
Throughout communities and ecosystems both within and downstream of mountain forests, there is an increasing risk of wildfire. After a wildfire, stakeholder management will vary depending on the rate and spatial heterogeneity of forest re-establishment ...

Eating Disorder Recovery: Fostering an Inclusive Culture [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Eating disorder (ED) recovery is often difficult to define, which may leave those offering recovery support feeling lost and discouraged when determining ED services in their Collegiate Recovery Program (CRP).

Forest response and recovery following disturbance in upland forests of the Atlantic Coastal Plain [PDF]

open access: yesFrontiers in Plant Science, 2014
Carbon and water cycling of forests contribute significantly to the Earth's overall biogeochemical cycling and may be affected by disturbance and climate change. As a larger body of research becomes available about leaf-level, ecosystem and regional scale effects of disturbances on forest ecosystems, a more mechanistic understanding is developing which

Incidence, Risk Factors and Management of Adverse Events in Contemporary Real‐World Care of Children with Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis

open access: yesArthritis Care &Research, Accepted Article.
Objective We describe the frequency, risk factors, severity, and management of actionable and serious adverse events (AAE and SAE) in children with newly diagnosed Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis (JIA) in Canada. Methods We enrolled patients within 3 months of JIA diagnosis in the Canadian Alliance of Pediatric Rheumatology Investigators (CAPRI) Registry,

Forest recovery prognostics in conservation units of the Atlantic rainforest

open access: yesEcological Informatics, 2021
Abstract Forest growth models can provide valuable support tools for forest recovery assessment and forestry management, whether in the form of diagnostic or prognostic. Furthremore, they can be applied to characterize each phytophysiognomy in terms of vegetation growth parameters that and can be applied to gauge the spatiotemporal progress of ...

Is an Apple an Orange? A Large Language Model Benchmark for Candidate Term Extraction and Subclass Decisions Against Upper Ontologies in Engineering and Materials Science

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Building machine‐readable vocabularies for materials science is slow, expert‐driven work. This study benchmarks 13 large language models on two of its first steps: finding candidate terms in engineering articles and deciding where they belong in a class hierarchy.
