The influence of forest regrowth, original canopy cover and tree size on saproxylic beetles associated with old oaks [PDF]

open access: yes, 2000
Abandoned management has caused many sites with free-standing, large oaks (Quercus robur) to become more shaded. This study shows how forest regrowth affects beetle species associated with old oaks in south-eastern Sweden. Beetles were trapped by pitfall

Restoring Overlogged Tropical Forests

open access: yes, 2006
Overlogged forests are degraded but nevertheless important. They may continue to be a source of timber and supply an important amount of forest products, particularly for local people whose livelihoods depend on their extraction. One aspect of restoration would be to prevent adding more overlogged areas by implementing sound logging, silvicultural, and

Spatial and Temporal Habitat Use of an Asian Elephant in Sumatra [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Increasingly, habitat fragmentation caused by agricultural and human development has forced Sumatran elephants into relatively small areas, but there is little information on how elephants use these areas and thus, how habitats can be managed to sustain ...

A new geodatabase of fuel treatments across federal lands in the USA

open access: yesScientific Data
Catastrophic wildfires threaten landscapes across the United States, and fuel treatments are key to mitigating this risk. Yet, information regarding when, where, and what types of treatments have occurred is scattered across multiple systems of record ...

Tight relationships between leaf and topsoil stoichiometries after 42 years of forest conversion from old-growth forests to Chinese fir plantations

open access: yesFrontiers in Forests and Global Change, 2023
Soil C:N:P stoichiometry can regulate plant survival and reflect soil fertility and nutrient utilization. Despite the widespread conversion of old-growth forests to plantations or secondary forests, there is little knowledge about how these conversions ...

Study of social perceptions to reconcile international concerns and local needs: A Mosaic of worlds and forests [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
International policies award a central role to participation by local populations in sustainable development issues. The development operators representing global undertakings must ensure true participation by the stakeholders working at the local scale.

Transferrin receptor 1‐mediated iron uptake supports thermogenic activation in human cervical‐derived adipocytes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
In this study, we found that human cervical‐derived adipocytes maintain intracellular iron level by regulating the expression of iron transport‐related proteins during adrenergic stimulation. Melanotransferrin is predicted to interact with transferrin receptor 1 based on in silico analysis.

Different contexts, same concerns? Wood gap and forest restoration in Indonesia and Cameroon [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
The gap between demand and supply of sustainable wood, in countries rich forest with a poor governance, is one of the major causes of forest degradation.

Large‐scale bidirectional arrayed genetic screens identify OXR1 and EMC4 as modifiers of αSynuclein aggregation

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Activation of the mitochondrial protein OXR1 increases pSyn129 αSynuclein aggregation by lowering ATP levels and altering mitochondrial membrane potential, particularly in response to MSA‐derived fibrils. In contrast, ablation of the ER protein EMC4 enhances autophagic flux and lysosomal clearance, broadly reducing α‐synuclein aggregates.
