Science is a many-faceted enterprise, hence it may be studied from a number of perspectives. Of course, not all perspectives can be examined simultaneously. Narrowing the view, as I do here, may give the erroneous impression that perspectives not in focus are unimportant or less important. This is not my feeling.

Forest soil science as a scientific discipline was formed during the expedition of the Forest Department, organized by V.V. Dokuchaev. His ideas about the effect of tree species on soils and soil-tree interactions served as the basis for forest typology and forest soil science.
