Seed Dispersal in Tropical Forests

2018
In this activity, students use data from published studies to understand patterns of seed dispersal and apply these ideas to the design of a conservation area.

Forest Seed Control

Journal of Forestry, 1936
Abstract The question of origin of seed, or provenience, has been extensively discussed, but much of what has been written seems far removed from the actuality of our planting operations. The purpose of this paper is to bring out what practical steps have been taken in European countries and what has so far been done in the United States

Seeds of the Forest Floor

Ecology, 1947
It is a common observation that when forests are removed by cutting, the change wrought in environmental influences invariably is accompanied by a striking and substantial difference in the plant population shortly thereafter. In the Northeast and in the Pacific Northwest, and possibly in other regions, Rubus is one of the most common genera to invade ...

Seed limitation in an Amazonian floodplain forest

Ecology, 2019
AbstractWe monitored a close‐spaced grid of 289 seed traps in 1.44 ha for 8.4 yr in an Amazonian floodplain forest. In a tree community containing hundreds of species, a median of just three to four species of tree seeds falls annually into each 0.5‐m2 establishment site. The number of seed species reaching a given site increased linearly with time for

Synthetic seeds in forest trees

1993
Artificial seed consists of somatic embryos surrounded by a protective coating. The coating around the somatic embryo provides the necessary protection during storage, handling and mechanical planting. The artificial seed may contain nutrients to provide the energy required for germination which is normally supplied by endosperm or female gametophyte ...

Forest Seed Science and Management

2017
Seed is the primary input for productive forestry and for any afforestation program. In propagation and conservation of a species, seeds play a vital role. In recent years owing to greater emphasis on community forestry, wasteland development and to support the National, Mission for a Green India as a part of the “National Action Plan on Climate Change”

Genetics and Forest Seed Handling

2016
High genetic quality seed is obtained from seed sources that match the planting site, have a good outcrossing rate, and are superior in some desirable characters. Non-degraded natural forests and plantations may be used as untested seed sources, which can sometimes be managed to promote outbreeding and increase seed production.

Seeding success: Integrating seed dispersal networks in tropical forest restoration

Biotropica
AbstractWhile the reassembly of fruit‐frugivore interactions remains at the forefront of tropical forest restoration, seed dispersal networks emerge as a potential approach to enhance restoration success. This review explores the integration of seed dispersal networks in tropical forest restoration, with the aims of (1) synthesizing important findings ...

New Forests from Better Seeds: The Role of Seed Physiology

1984
Full utilization of seed supplies requires a commitment to improving tree seed technology, with the help of recent advances in seed physiology. Studies of seed maturation have led to new collection and extraction technology which should increase seed yields.
