Studies in succession attempt to determine the changes in species composition and other ecosystem attributes expected to occur over periods of time. Mathematical models developed in forestry and ecology to study ecological succession are reviewed. Tree models, gap models and forest models are discussed.

Scaling Issues in Forest Succession Modelling
Climatic Change, 2000This paper reviews scaling issues in forest succession modelling, focusing on forest gap models. Two modes of scaling are distinguished: (1) implicit scaling, i.e. taking scale-dependent features into account while developing model equations, and (2) explicit scaling, i.e.

Abstract The modeling methodology includes recognition of cover-states which are similar to successional stages. The general form of the model is ordinary linear differential equations using considerations of stand dynamics and sylvics to determine rates of change.

The role of bryophytes in forest decline and forest succession
2000This paper examines the bryophyte-paludification hypothesis introduced by Klinger (1990) which claims that mature upland forests develop into a stable climax bog community in the absence of large-scale disturbance. The primary mechanism of this process is dictated by the ground cover of bryophytes that kill fine feeder tree roots.

Forest dynamics and successions

Postfire Succession in an Adirondack Forest
Geographical Review, 2007Aspen forests, with spring green leaves early in the growing season and dazzling gold foliage in autumn, contrast with the loden green forests of spruce and fir on the steep slopes west of Noonmark Mountain in the High Peaks Region of upstate New York's Adirondack Park.

The Role of Succession in Forest Health
Journal of Sustainable Forestry, 1994Forest health has become a major problem in much of the west and is closely linked to forest succession. Disturbances such as fire, flood, or windstorm periodically interrupt forest succession and recreate earlier seral conditions. The frequency and intensity of disturbance controls the extent of succession or the number of seral stages that may occur ...
