Changes in rainfall interception along a secondary forest succession gradient in lowland Panama [PDF]

open access: yesHydrology and Earth System Sciences, 2013
Secondary forests are rapidly expanding in tropical regions. Yet, despite the importance of understanding the hydrological consequences of land-cover dynamics, the relationship between forest succession and canopy interception is poorly understood.

Changes in soil bacterial communities and functional groups beneath coarse woody debris across a subalpine forest successional series

open access: yesGlobal Ecology and Conservation, 2023
Although the role of coarse woody debris (CWD) in nurturing biodiversity has been well documented, there is little understanding of how CWD with varying diameters across the forest succession series affect the composition and diversity of the soil ...

A phytosociological survey of the boreal forest (Vaccinio-Piceetea) in North America [PDF]

open access: yes, 1998
A survey of syntaxa of vegetation of North American boreal forests (class Vaccinio-Piceetea) is presented. This phytosociological survey, carried out combining the Braun-Blanquet method with numerical syntaxonomical analyses (cluster and correspondence ...

From mice to humans—divergent strategies for intestinal homeostasis and regeneration

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Recent advances such as organoid genome editing, xenotransplantation, imaging, and whole‐genome sequencing have enabled direct studies of human intestinal stem cells (ISCs). These studies reveal species‐specific features, including slower ISC proliferation, distinct injury responses, slower somatic mutation accumulation in humans, and an inverse ...

Tropical dry forest recovery : processes and causes of change [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
Seasonally dry areas are one of the preferred zones for human inhabitance in the tropics. Large forest areas are converted to other land uses and many are covered by secondary forests that grow naturally after cessation of disturbance.

Circular RNA expression landscapes in myelodysplastic neoplasms: Associations with mutational signatures and disease progression

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
In this explorative study, the abundance of circular RNA molecules in bone marrow stem cells was found to be elevated in patients with high‐risk myelodysplastic neoplasms, and to be associated with an increased risk of progression to acute myeloid leukemia.

Dynamics of soil microbial communities involved in carbon cycling along three successional forests in southern China

open access: yesFrontiers in Microbiology
Dynamics of plant communities during forest succession have been received great attention in the past decades, yet information about soil microbial communities that are involved in carbon cycling remains limited.

Developmental programmes drive cellular plasticity, disease progression and therapy resistance in lung adenocarcinoma

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This study shows that lung adenocarcinomas exploit developmental branching morphogenesis to acquire a therapy resistant basal‐like tumour cell state. This process was found to be regulated by combined TP53 loss‐of‐function and type‐I interferon signalling, identifying a novel axis for biomarker and therapeutic target discovery.

Leaf trait networks shift toward high modularity during the succession of a subtropical forest, in southwest China

open access: yesEcological Indicators
During the process of forest succession, coexisting plant species fulfill diverse functions by modifying the interrelationships among functional traits.

Shifts in soil nutrient concentrations and C:N:P stoichiometry during long-term natural vegetation restoration [PDF]

open access: yesPeerJ, 2020
Background Ecological stoichiometry (C:N:P ratios) in soil is an important indicator of the elemental balance in ecological interactions and processes.
