Unexpectedly large impact of forest management and grazing on global vegetation biomass [PDF]

open access: yesNature, 2017
Carbon stocks in vegetation have a key role in the climate system. However, the magnitude, patterns and uncertainties of carbon stocks and the effect of land use on the stocks remain poorly quantified. Here we show, using state-of-the-art datasets, that vegetation currently stores around 450 petagrams of carbon. In the hypothetical absence of land use,

Drivers of insect herbivory resistance and tolerance to plant damage in the Brachypodium distachyon species complex

open access: yesAmerican Journal of Botany, EarlyView.
Abstract Premise Insect herbivory is a major biotic factor shaping plant populations and driving the evolution of defensive traits. Polyploidy (whole‐genome duplication) often induces substantial phenotypic and genotypic changes that may affect species interactions, including herbivory.

Technobiological Pathways for High‐CO₂ Capture Using Micro‐/Macroalgae: Genetic Engineering, Process Automation, and Value‐Added Bioproducts

open access: yesAsia-Pacific Journal of Chemical Engineering, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions have emerged as one of the most critical drivers of climate change; this is primarily due to high concentrations and long atmospheric life of carbon dioxide (CO2). For a significant amount of time, various biological processes such as microalgal cultivation, cyanobacterial systems, photosynthetic microorganisms ...

Impact of forest management on global vegetation biomass

open access: yesProceedings of the 5th European Congress of Conservation Biology, 2018
Carbon stocks in vegetation play a key role in the climate system. In a recent study, we showed the effect of land use on these carbon stocks. We found that vegetation currently stores around 450 petagrams of carbon, which is less than half of the potential vegetation that would prevail in the hypothetical absence of land use.

Enabling the study of gene function in gymnosperms: Virus‐induced gene silencing in Ephedra tweedieana

open access: yesApplications in Plant Sciences, EarlyView.
Abstract Premise As the sister clade to angiosperms, extant gymnosperms are crucial for reconstructing ancestral gene regulatory networks in seed plants. This highlights the need for model systems representing each of their distinct lineages. However, tools to quickly and effectively investigate gene function in gymnosperms are still limited due to the

Effects of Competition, Drought Stress and Photosynthetic Productivity on the Radial Growth of White Spruce in Western Canada

open access: yesFrontiers in Plant Science, 2017
Understanding the complex interactions of competition, climate warming-induced drought stress, and photosynthetic productivity on the radial growth of trees is central to linking climate change impacts on tree growth, stand structure and in general ...

Remote Sensing Monitoring of Vegetation Dynamic Changes after Fire in the Greater Hinggan Mountain Area: The Algorithm and Application for Eliminating Phenological Impacts

open access: yesRemote Sensing, 2020
Fires are frequent in boreal forests affecting forest areas. The detection of forest disturbances and the monitoring of forest restoration are critical for forest management.
