Challenging the Black Box: A Comprehensive Evaluation of Attribution Maps of CNN Applications in Agriculture and Forestry [PDF]

open access: yesProceedings of the 19th International Joint Conference on Computer Vision, Imaging and Computer Graphics Theory and Applications - Volume 2: VISAPP, 2024, pp. 483-492
In this study, we explore the explainability of neural networks in agriculture and forestry, specifically in fertilizer treatment classification and wood identification. The opaque nature of these models, often considered 'black boxes', is addressed through an extensive evaluation of state-of-the-art Attribution Maps (AMs), also known as class ...

Dual‐Scale Hydration‐Induced Electrical and Mechanical Torsional Energy Harvesting in Heterophilically Designed CNT Yarns

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Despite the abundance and vast energy potential of water, its efficient utilization is hindered by single‐mode energy conversion. Herein, heterophilic CNT yarns that allow for simultaneous energy harvesting by means of dual‐scale hydration—electrical energy harvesting through proton gradients and mechanical torsional harvesting through microchannel ...

Maine's Forestry and Logging Industry: Building a Model for Forecasting [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv
From 2000 to 2017, 64% of Maine's pulp and paper processing mills shut down; these closures resulted in harmful effects to communities in Maine and beyond. One question this research asks is how will key macroeconomic and related variables for Maine's forestry and logging industry change in the future?

Omni‐Directional Assembly of 2D Single‐Crystalline Metal Nanosheets

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
A versatile assembly method is developed to uniformly assemble 2D single‐crystal copper nanosheets (Cu NS) onto substrates with complex shapes via ultrasonication process. This technique leverages cavitation effects to deposit monolayer Cu NS films with minimal overlap.
