Dynamic sound attenuation at hypersonic frequencies in silica glass

open access: yes, 2006
In order to clarify the origin of the dominant processes responsible for the acoustic attenuation of phonons, which is a much debatted topic, we present Bril louin scattering experiments in various silica glasses of different OH impurities content.

‘Missing persons’: Ancient legacies of human–environment interaction in tropical natural properties inscribed under the 1972 World Heritage Convention

open access: yesArchaeometry, Volume 68, Issue S2, Page S9-S30, May 2026.
Abstract Cultural and natural values form the core of World Heritage designation. Properties displaying both values, however, comprise a fraction of inscriptions (currently c. 3%) to the World Heritage List. In 1992, when that fraction stood at c. 5%, adoption of the popular ‘cultural landscapes’ category of cultural heritage in 1992 was therefore ...

How the European External Action Service Deals with Religion through Religious Freedom. EU Diplomacy Paper 7/2017 [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
The purpose of this paper is to understand why and how the European External Action Service (EEAS) has developed a specific approach towards religion, an approach characterised by the focus on freedom of religion and belief (FoRB).

Observation of the onset of strong scattering on high frequency acoustic phonons in densified silica glass

open access: yes, 2003
The linewidth of longitudinal acoustic waves in densified silica glass is obtained by inelastic x-ray scattering. It increases with a high power alpha of the frequency up to a crossover where the waves experience strong scattering. We find that \alpha is

The Ontogeny of Vocal Rhythms in a Non‐Human Primate

open access: yesDevelopmental Science, Volume 29, Issue 3, May 2026.
ABSTRACT Rhythm is a fundamental aspect of human behaviour, and musical rhythm provides one of its most elaborate instances. Unlike speech, this rhythmic behaviour is characterized by the production of temporal patterns structured around small‐integer ratios, which emerge early in life and change systematically across development.

Anharmonic vs. relaxational sound damping in glasses: II. Vitreous silica

open access: yes, 2005
The temperature dependence of the frequency dispersion in the sound velocity and damping of vitreous silica is reanalyzed. Thermally activated relaxation accounts for the sound attenuation observed above 10 K at sonic and ultrasonic frequencies.

Bridging the Energy Balance Gap in Eddy‐Covariance Measurements: Insights From Standardized Network Data

open access: yesGlobal Change Biology, Volume 32, Issue 5, May 2026.
Written Summary: Measuring energy exchanges between land and atmosphere is fundamental to understanding climate, but these measurements are systematically incomplete, with 20%–40% of energy consistently unaccounted for. Analyzing data from 84 sites worldwide, we show that carefully tracking all energy components and applying strict data quality filters

Fluctuating Bond Aggregation: a Model for Chemical Gel Formation

open access: yes, 1995
The Diffusion-Limited Cluster-Cluster Aggregation (DLCA) model is modified by including cluster deformations using the {\it bond fluctuation} algorithm. From 3$d$ computer simulations, it is shown that, below a given threshold value $c_g$ of the volumic ...
