FORMALDEHYDE POLYMERS IN COMETS

The possibility that crystalline formaldehyde polymers are present in cometary dust is discussed. In common with most other parent molecules proposed for comets, (H2CO)n is difficult to detect, even if it is present in relatively high concentrations.

21—The Determination of the Formaldehyde Yield of Cellulose Textiles Treated with Formaldehyde, Urea-Formaldehyde, or Melamine-Formaldehyde

A method is described for the analysis of three permanent finishes based on formaldehyde. The finish is hydrolysed by 12N sulphuric acid, without heating, and the yield of formaldehyde is assessed colorimetrically by means of the reaction with chromotropic acid.

According to Meyer1 the history of urea–formaldehyde (UF) resins can be divided into five different periods: (i) Synthesis of the raw materials urea and formaldehyde. This period started with the synthesis of urea by Wohler in 1824. Formaldehyde was first recognized by Butlerov in 1859 when attempting to synthesize methanediol.
