Formant centralization ratio: a proposal for a new acoustic measure of dysarthric speech.

open access: yesJournal of Speech, Language and Hearing Research, 2010
PURPOSE The vowel space area (VSA) has been used as an acoustic metric of dysarthric speech, but with varying degrees of success. In this study, the authors aimed to test an alternative metric to the VSA-the formant centralization ratio (FCR), which is ...

Bio-inspired broad-class phonetic labelling [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
Recent studies have shown that the correct labeling of phonetic classes may help current Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) when combined with classical parsing automata based on Hidden Markov Models (HMM).Through the present paper a method for Phonetic ...

How far are vowel formants from computed vocal tract resonances? [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2012
We compare numerically computed resonances of the human vocal tract with formants that have been extracted from speech during vowel pronunciation. The geometry of the vocal tract has been obtained by MRI from a male subject, and the corresponding speech has been recorded simultaneously.

Vowel formant dispersion as a measure of articulation proficiency.

open access: yesJournal of the Acoustical Society of America, 2012
The articulatory range of a speaker has previously been estimated by the shape formed by first and second formant measurements of produced vowels. In a majority of the currently available metrics, formant frequency measurements are reduced to a single ...

Significance of the levels of spectral valleys with application to front/back distinction of vowel sounds [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2015
An objective critical distance (OCD) has been defined as that spacing between adjacent formants, when the level of the valley between them reaches the mean spectral level. The measured OCD lies in the same range (viz., 3-3.5 bark) as the critical distance determined by subjective experiments for similar experimental conditions.

Formant analysis for Kiswahili vowels

open access: yesTanzania Journal of Science, 2009
Vowels' spectral characteristics in a language have been studied for suitability in speech recognition by using formants analysis technique. Other techniques do mostly require large computer memories for speech processing and analysis. In this paper, the formant analysis for Kiswahili vowels has been presented.

Changes in the McGurk Effect Across Phonetic Contexts [PDF]

open access: yes, 2002
To investigate the process underlying audiovisual speech perception, the McGurk illusion was examined across a range of phonetic contexts. Two major changes were found.
