To the Editor. —The careful reader of our article, 1 which appeared in the SeptemberArchives, will have noticed that equation 5 is incorrect as printed. At neutralization, ie, when the instrument image (I 3 ) equals the emergent image (I 3 ), the relative speed of the reflex (RSR) is not equal to one, as it should be according to the article.

This paper develops a formula of inversion for an integral transform of a type similar to that associated with the names of Kontorovich and Lebedev except that the kernel involves the Neumann function $Y_u (kr)$ and the variable r varies over the truncated infinite interval $a \leq r 0$.

Journal of Knot Theory and Its Ramifications, 2000
A smooth knot is non-trivial precisely if it cannot be unlinked from every small deformation of itself. White's formula expresses the linking number of a representative of a knot and a deformation of it as a sum of two, not necessarily integral, terms — a writhe and a twist. An elementary proof is given of this formula.

The ‘Finding a Formula’-Formula
1982In William Dean Howells’s short story ‘Editha’ the main structuring device of the plot is the conflict between the militaristic idealism of the relatives and friends of the heroine, whose name (Editha) reveals that she delights in battle-slaughter, and the relatives and friends of the hero, whose name (George) reveals a pacifist, agrarian disposition.

Say you are plowing a field on a hot summer day. Say you possess a yak that pulls you and your plow around the field. Say you happen to be thirsty, your gourd is empty and you fancy something creamy and fresh. Hmmm. You happen to notice that something is dripping from your hairy friend’s underside, and not from the bad parts. No one is watching. It is,

With regard to Ellis's now famous formula: it is fair to say that the indices are a bit off-putting to the average radiotherapy practitioner, while the notion of a “single dose equivalent”, be it true or false, is at least mildly attractive. The calculation is tedious. You can buy a special slide rule if you like.
