Reading Fortran

A new type of computer science service course is described which was developed in response to a request from several natural science departments. The goal of the course is to give advanced students the ability to read and understand existing Fortran programs. An evaluation of the course is also given.

The FORTRAN Language

The FORTRAN language was intended to be a vehicle for expressing scientific and mathematical computation, while allowing efficient object code to be produced. Since there was an emphasis on scientific computation in FORTRAN and FORTRAN II, little provision was made for heterogeneous data structures.

The future of fortran

Fortran has been with us for a long time. It was the first computer language to be standardized (in 1966) and has since been revised three times (Fortran 77, Fortran 90, and Fortran 95). The Fortran 90 revision was major; those of Fortran 77 and Fortran 95 were relatively minor. Almost all compilers now implement Fortran 95.
