Random finite element analysis on ground subsidence caused by tunnel excavation in karst regions with spatial variable soil

open access: yesDeep Underground Science and Engineering, EarlyView.
This study investigates ground subsidence during tunnel excavation in karst areas, highlighting the combined effects of karst cave proximity, cave size, and soil spatial variability. Findings suggest that shorter cave distances and larger cave sizes increase subsidence variability, and a modified Peck formula is proposed for more accurate subsidence ...

Study of the Mechanical Behavior of Retaining Structures and Adjacent Buildings during the Excavation of Deep and Long Pits

open access: yesShock and Vibration
Excavation of deep and long pits can cause strata deformation and settlement of adjacent buildings. The excavation of a deep foundation pit of a nearby building in Zhengzhou City, China, is taken as the research object.

Instability mechanism and failure characteristics of underground cavern in block system under the action of seismic waves

open access: yesDeep Underground Science and Engineering, EarlyView.
Seismic waves with tensile stress, high amplitude, and low frequency are most likely to trigger block instability and sliding. Blocks with a single sliding surface are more prone to movement than those with multiple constraints, and roof‐positioned blocks are especially vulnerable to slide.

Numerical simulation study on the evolution of the temperature field and frozen wall in fractured rock mass

open access: yesDeep Underground Science and Engineering, EarlyView.
The evolution of the temperature field and frozen wall under different fracture conditions was examined by an artificial ground freezing‐based thermal‐hydraulic coupled model. It was observed that fracture inclination affects the interaction extent of freezing pipes and fracture, while phase transition extent is the dominant factor for heat transfer in

Crack mechanism of shield tunnel under excavation of foundation pit

open access: yesAIP Advances
The segmental tunnel lining of existing shield tunnels is highly susceptible to crack and water leakage due to the excavation and unloading effects of adjacent foundation pits, posing significant risks to tunnel operational safety. Consequently, the effective control of crack damage is of paramount importance.
