Settlement rate of foundations on unsaturated soils
Canadian Geotechnical Journal, 1999This paper deals with the one-dimensional consolidation of unsaturated soils due to the application of external loads. A simple equation is derived that enables one to predict the rate of settlement of shallow foundations with time. This equation uses the constitutive relationships proposed by Fredlund and Morgenstern to define the volume change of ...

A CONTRIBUTION TO THE SETTLEMENT ANALYSIS OF FOUNDATIONS ON CLAY
Géotechnique, 1957Synopsis The settlement of a foundation on a saturated clay is composed chiefly of the “immediate” settlement due to deformations taking place at constant volume, and the “consolidation” settlement due to volume reduction consequent upon the dissipation of pore pressures.

Shallow Foundations — Settlements
1995Foundations supported on sand are designed using the allowable bearing pressure as shown in Chapter 8 so it is expected that the foundation will not settle more than the allowable settlement. Semi-empirical methods to estimate the settlement of a foundation on sand are given in this chapter.

1994
The previous three chapters have been mainly concerned with the ultimate collapse of structures, as a result of shear stresses which exceed the shear strength of the soil. In some cases, however, large soil deformations may occur before this state of ultimate collapse is reached, and such deformations may lead to unacceptable movements and distortion ...

Settlement analysis of shallow foundations on sand
Proceedings of the Institution of Civil Engineers - Geotechnical Engineering, 2011The evaluation of ground movements is one of the most important issues in geotechnical engineering applications. In this context, the paper is aimed at prediction of the load–settlement performance of shallow foundations by taking soil non-linearity into account.

A probabilistic analysis of foundation settlements
Computers and Geotechnics, 1996Abstract This paper deals with a settlement analysis of shallow foundations resting on a layered subsoil. Three basic sources of randomness are discussed: random shape of the subsoil (location of an interface between two strata), random material parameters and random loads.

Settlement of Reinforced Sand in Foundations
Journal of Geotechnical and Geoenvironmental Engineering, 1997The technique of reinforcing soil for foundation improvement is well established. This paper addresses the aspect of settlement of reinforced sand foundations, where the major part of the existing work deals with the aspect of bearing capacity. A detailed analysis is made paying individual attention to soil, reinforcement, and the interface between the

Floating Foundations for Control of Settlement
Journal of the Soil Mechanics and Foundations Division, 1971Floating foundations are an effective means for reducing the settlement caused by placing heavy foundation loads on deep deposits of soft clay. This paper first examines some fundamental design considerations concerning heave and settlement of floating foundations and then evaluates the performance of five floating foundations on the MIT campus ...

Calculation of settlements for a strip foundation
Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineering, 2012A solution is presented for calculation of the total settlement of a strip foundation with allowance for additional stresses, which develop in the region under consideration due to displacement of the loaded section of the boundary, and can be determined by solving the second basic boundary problem of the plane theory of elasticity for a half plane ...

SEISMIC SETTLEMENT OF SHALLOW FOUNDATIONS
2014Many foundations failures have been observed during earthquakes because of excessive settlement and tilt. Experimental and analytical studies have been conducted to develop procedures for estimation of settlement. Empirical equations have also been suggested . The settlement and tilt are calculated following pseudo-static procedures.
