Counterion Dependent Side‐Chain Relaxation Stiffens a Chemically Doped Thienothiophene Copolymer

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Oxidation of a thienothiophene copolymer, p(g3TT‐T2), via different doping strategies and dopant molecules resulted in materials with similar oxidation levels and a high electrical conductivity of ≈100 S cm−1. However, mechanical properties varied significantly, with sub‐glass transition temperatures and elastic moduli spanning from –44°C to –3°C and ...

Wearable Smart Patches on Sustainable Chitosan With Reversible Microbial Growth‐Inhibitory Properties

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Chitosan, a polysaccharide upcycled from biowaste, has long promised sustainable, biocompatible, and antimicrobial films and devices, an appeal reinforced by its recent regulatory recognition, with several chitosan‐based antibacterial dressings gaining clearance through the Food and Drug Administration's 510(k) pathway.

Fully Additive Vertical Organic Electrochemical Transistors on Renewable and Compostable Substrates Enable Ultrasensitive Bioelectronics

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Fully additive vertical organic electrochemical transistors (vOECTs) with channel‐length of 226 nm on a 50 µm compostable substrate achieve >106 current modulation and ∼36 mS transconductance. Ion‐selective integration enables 1.1 mA dec−1 sensitivity and 36 µm detection limit, highlighting a scalable platform for sustainable electronics and ...

Burrowing Crabs Weaken Mutualism Between Foundation Species [PDF]

open access: yesEcosystems, 2018
Foundation species often interact with each other and co-create habitat upon which other species depend. Whether the presence of these facilitated species feeds back to mediate the growth and resilience of the foundation species themselves, and influence the strength of their interactions, remains poorly understood.

Modeling foundation species in food webs [PDF]

open access: yesEcosphere, 2013
Foundation species are basal species that play an important role in determining community composition by physically structuring ecosystems and modulating ecosystem processes. Foundation species largely operate via non‐trophic interactions, presenting a challenge to incorporating them into food web models. Here, we used non‐linear, bioenergetic predator‐

Distributions of Species Ecological Foundations

2016
This chapter provides an overview of the ecological foundations concerning the distribution of individuals, species, and populations. It explains that each species has a unique geographic range that is central to all biogeography. The limits of geographical ranges include physical limiting factors, disturbance, dispersal, time, and interactions with ...

Marine Macrophytes as Foundation Species

2016
Marine macrophytes (macroalgae, seagrasses, and mangroves) comprise thousands of species distributed in shallow water areas along the world’s coastlines. They play a key role in marine ecosystems regarding biodiversity and energy flow. A large proportion of macrophyte species can be characterised as ecosystem engineers—organisms that directly or ...

Size-dependent vulnerability to herbivory in a coastal foundation species

Oecologia, 2020
Ecologists have long wondered how plants and algae persist under constant herbivory, and studies have shown that factors like chemical defense and morphology can protect these species from consumption. However, grazers are also highly diverse and exert varying top-down control over primary producers depending on traits such as body size.
