Fourth-Order Tensors

2009
Fourth-order tensors play an important role in continuum mechanics where they appear as elasticity and compliance tensors. In this section we define fourth-order tensors and learn some basic operations with them. To this end, we consider a set \(\mathcal{L}{\text{ in}}^{n}\) of all linear mappings of one second-order tensor into another one within ...

Fourth-Order Blood Pressure Waves

JAMA: The Journal of the American Medical Association, 1990
A critically ill 80-year-old man had blood pressure waves with a period of about 30 minutes. These blood pressure oscillations, lasting longer than 18 hours, were accompanied by oscillations in heart rate, central venous pressure, pulmonary arterial pressure, and oxygen saturation of mixed venous blood.

A fourth‐order extrapolation method for special nonlinear fourth‐order boundary value problems

Communications in Applied Numerical Methods, 1986
AbstractA fourth‐order convergent finite difference method is developed for the numerical solution of the nonlinear fourth‐order boundary value problem y(iv)(x) = f(x,y), a < x < b, y(a) = Ao,y″(a) = Bo, y(b) = A1, y″(b) = B1. The method is based on a second‐order converget method which is used on two grids, fourth‐order convergence being ...

A Fourth Order Reaction

Nature, 1948
IN a study of the reactions of metal complexes with hydrogen peroxide, in particular the system Fe3+, αα'-dipyridyl which gives the "Katalasestoss" reported by Kuhn and Wassermann1, we found it necessary to obtain data on the equilibrium and kinetics of formation of the red ferrous complex ion, Fe(Dipy)32+, formed according to the reaction : A recent

Virtual control for fourth-order problems and for heterogeneous fourth-order second-order coupling

2003
We consider both approximation of fourth-order problems derived, e.g., the Kirchoff plate model, and heterogeneous coupling between a fourth-order problem and a reduced second-order problem, describing a plate-membrane model. The multidomain virtual control approach is used. This paper is devoted to the analysis and construction of the cost function al

Fourth-order velocity statistics

Fluid Dynamics Research, 2001
An investigation of several fourth-order velocity statistics is described. Whereas local isotropy and local scaling are applicable to structure functions expressible as averages of differences of velocity, local isotropy and local scaling are inapplicable to the structure functions that we study.

Fourth-Order Elastic Coefficients

Journal of Applied Physics, 1964
The fourth-order elastic coefficients form an eighth-order tensor containing 6561 components of which 126 are independent for a triclinic system. From symmetry arguments it is shown that there are only eleven independent fourth-order elastic coefficients for a crystal with full cubic symmetry.

Fourth Order Differential Equations

2004
In addition to discussing general fourth order nonlinear equations with quasiderivatives, we consider sublinear equations in self-adjoint form, a two term nonlinear equation, and then fourth order linear equations.

Fourth‐order braneworld gravity

Annalen der Physik, 2010
AbstractWe discuss a general fourth‐order theory of gravity and formulate the generalized Israel junction conditions for the theory by application of a generalized Gibbons‐Hawking boundary term which is added to the action of the fourth‐order gravity theory.
