Antibacterial Additive for Polystyrene Based on Silver Nanoparticles Supported on Titanium Dioxide

open access: yesInternational Journal of Polymer Science, Volume 2016, Issue 1, 2016., 2016
Silver nanoparticles supported on titanium dioxide nanoparticles (Ag/TiO2) were incorporated and evaluated as antibacterial additive for polystyrene materials. These particles were synthesized using a deposition‐precipitation method by adding silver nitrate as metallic precursor, sodium hydroxide as reducing agent, and commercial TiO2 (P25) as support.

Identification of bapA in Strains of Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica Isolated from Wild Animals Kept in Captivity in Sinaloa, Mexico

open access: yesVeterinary Medicine International, Volume 2016, Issue 1, 2016., 2016
bapA, previously named stm2689, encodes the BapA protein, which, along with cellulose and fimbriae, constitutes biofilms. Biofilms are communities of microorganisms that grow in a matrix of exopolysaccharides and may adhere to living tissues or inert surfaces.

Evaluation of Hypoglycemic and Genotoxic Effect of Polyphenolic Bark Extract from Quercus sideroxyla

open access: yesEvidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine, Volume 2016, Issue 1, 2016., 2016
Quercus sideroxyla is a wood species whose bark has phenolic compound and should be considered to be bioactive; the hypoglycemic and genotoxic properties of Q. sideroxyla bark were evaluated in this study. Total phenolic compound was determined in crude extract (CE) and organic extract (OE). The OE has the highest amount of phenols (724.1 ± 12.0 GAE/g).

Fenton Process Coupled to Ultrasound and UV Light Irradiation for the Oxidation of a Model Pollutant

open access: yesJournal of Chemistry, Volume 2016, Issue 1, 2016., 2016
The Fenton process coupled to photosonolysis (UV light and Us), using Fe2O3 catalyst supported on Al2O3, was used to oxidize a model pollutant like acid green 50 textile dye (AG50). Dye degradation was followed by AG50 concentration decay analyses.

Specific Anthocyanin Contents of Whole Blue Maize Second‐Generation Snacks: An Evaluation Using Response Surface Methodology and Lime Cooking Extrusion

open access: yesJournal of Chemistry, Volume 2016, Issue 1, 2016., 2016
Lime cooking extrusion (LCE) is a widely applied technology for producing second‐generation snacks, as an alternative to traditional nixtamalization (TN). Pigmented maize has been used to produce snacks with similar organoleptic characteristics to TN products and to obtain a product with additional functional benefits due to the anthocyanic compounds ...

Soil carbon and nitrogen cycling at the atmosphere–soil interface: Quantifying the responses of biocrust–soil interactions to global change

open access: yesGlobal Change Biology, Volume 30, Issue 10, October 2024.
Despite the critical role of biological soil crusts (biocrusts) in dryland C and N cycles, little is known about how biocrust‐derived C and N move into the soil. This study reveals how biocrusts facilitate the downward movement of C and N and drive the formation of mineral‐associated organic matter in subcrust soils.
