We provide a historic overview of microscopic soil structure characterization from its founding father, Walter Kubiëna, to several technical revolutions like automation, digitalization, and artificial intelligence. In addition to technical advancements, we explore how concepts and research questions have evolved in time.

Energy-optimal steering of transitions through a fractal basin boundary. [PDF]
We study fluctuational transitions in a discrete dy- namical system having two co-existing attractors in phase space, separated by a fractal basin boundary. It is shown that transitions occur via a unique ac- cessible point on the boundary.

ABSTRACT Urban resilience and ecosystem health are essential foundations for regional sustainable development, yet their coupled and coordinated relationships remain insufficiently explored at the urban‐agglomeration scale. Taking the 13 prefecture‐level cities in the Beijing‐Tianjin‐Hebei urban agglomeration as the study area and using panel data for ...

A New Fractal Derivative and Its Integral Transform Methods for Economic Models
In this paper, we introduce the RLC-fractal derivative along with the fractal Laplace and fractal Sumudu transforms of it. Then we apply these transformations to solve economic models involving the RLC-fractal derivative.

ABSTRACT Urban expansion can substantially reshape ecosystem structure and functioning, especially in ecologically fragile Karst landscapes. Clarifying how ecosystem health (EH) responds to urbanization and identifying the factors that drive spatial variation in EH are important for regional sustainability.

ABSTRACT Soil salinization negatively impacts the economic development and ecological environment, particularly in the arid and semiarid regions of China. The Qaidam Basin constitutes a major distribution area of saline‐alkali land in the country. However, the distribution patterns of salinity and nutrients within soil profiles and the underlying salt ...

ABSTRACT A scientific assessment of ecological security (ES) and its nonlinear mechanism for key driving factors in the Yellow River Basin (YRB) is of great significance for ecological protection and sustainable development. This study proposes an ES assessment framework, which links ecosystem risk (ER), ecosystem health (EH), and ecosystem services ...

Ultrastable Water‐in‐Water Emulsions by Addition of Polyion Complex Micelles
Water‐in‐water emulsions from mixtures of dextran and poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) prepared in the presence of polyion complex micelles display an increase of stability from few hours to several months. Both dextran‐in‐PEO and PEO‐in‐dextran were stable against coalescence over this period of time.
