Bone mineral density and fracture in postmenopausal women

Maturitas, 1989
This retrospective study examined bone mineral density (BMD) for discrimination of female patients with fractures. Bone densitometry was done in 146 patients over the age of 50 years at radius, lumbar spine, and proximal femur sites using single and dual photon absorptiometry.

Intramembrane particle densities in freeze-fractured sarcoplasmic reticulum

Canadian Journal of Zoology, 1978
The particle densities over various regions of the sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR) have been analyzed in freeze-etched replicas of the chicken posterior latissimus dorsi muscle. A-band, I-band, and terminal-cisternae portions of the SR are shown to possess particle densities of 3465/μm2, 3467/μm2, and 3689/μm2 respectively, indicating that there is a ...

Bone Density Measurement and Assessment of Fracture Risk

Clinical Obstetrics & Gynecology, 2013
The most useful methods for estimating fracture risk are bone mineral density (BMD) testing by dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry and consideration of clinical risk factors (CRFs) for fracture. The combination of BMD and CRFs predicts fractures better than BMD or CRFs alone.

Paracetamol (acetaminophen) use, fracture and bone mineral density

Bone, 2011
Paracetamol is the most widely prescribed simple analgesic and antipyretic. It exerts its effects via cyclooxygenase and endocannabinoid pathways, which may affect signalling in bone cells and hence influence bone metabolism. Given the high rates of paracetamol use in the community and the evidence linking its mechanism of action to bone metabolism, we

Changes in Scaphoid Bone Density after Acute Fracture

Journal of Hand Surgery, 2006
The radiographic density of the proximal fragments of 16 scaphoid fractures was assessed on scaphoid series radiographs taken at 6 to 12 weeks. In addition, dual energy X-ray absorptiometry measurements of bone mineral density in the distal radius and proximal and distal fracture fragments were performed at 1 to 2 weeks and 6 to 12 weeks.

Association of Bone Mineral Density and Pediatric Fractures

Journal of Pediatric Orthopaedics, 1987
Bone mineral density in the lumbar spine and the left femoral neck was measured for a group of 17 children, 3-14 years of age, who had sustained traumatic fractures. Children with any signs of metabolic bone disease were excluded from the study.

FRAX and fracture prediction without bone mineral density

Climacteric, 2015
The major application of FRAX in osteoporosis is to direct pharmacological interventions to those at high risk of fracture. Whereas the efficacy of osteoporosis treatment, with the possible exception of alendronate, is largely independent of baseline bone mineral density (BMD), it remains a widely held perception that osteoporosis therapies are only ...

Fracture mechanics applied to engineering problems-strain energy density fracture criterion

Engineering Fracture Mechanics, 1974
Abstract Traditional design criteria make no attempt to account for the failure mode which is characteristic of a flawed, frangible structure. A design rationale is outlined for materials which contain flaws caused, for example, by metallurgical inclusions, fabrication and erection overloads, and fatigue cracking.

High-Density Brine-Based Fracturing Fluid for Ultra-Deep Fracturing Stimulation

SPE Annual Technical Conference and Exhibition, 2012
Abstract With the oil and gas industry looking ever deeper for hydrocarbons, well control and completions have become important challenges to overcome. Ultra-deep wells usually have pressured or over-pressured formations and require heavyweight brines to control hydrostatic pressures.

Bone density, geometry, and fracture in elderly men

Current Osteoporosis Reports, 2006
Bone geometry is a major determinant of the mechanical resistance of bone. Mechanical strength of the vertebrae depends on the cross-sectional area of the vertebral body and on the size of the posterior arch. Smaller bone width is associated with higher risk of stress fracture.
