When do fractured media become seismically anisotropic? Some implications on quantifying fracture properties [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Fractures are pervasive features within the Earth's crust and they have a significant influence on the multi-physical response of the subsurface. The presence of coherent fracture sets often leads to observable seismic anisotropy enabling seismic ...

On the Impact Energy Absorption of an Advanced High‐Strength Bilayer Steel Composite Consisting of Carbide‐Free Bainitic Steel and High‐Mn Twinning‐Induced Plasticity Steel

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Excellent combinations of strength and impact toughness are obtained in a bilayer composite of high‐strength carbide‐free bainitic (CFB) steel and high‐ductility twinning‐induced plasticity (TWIP) steel. The composite absorbs energy at small strains when the notch is placed on the TWIP side and at high strains when the notch is placed on the CFB side ...

Mechanical performance of glass-based geopolymer matrix composites reinforced with cellulose fibers [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Glass-based geopolymers, incorporating fly ash and borosilicate glass, were processed in conditions of high alkalinity (NaOH 10-13 M). Different formulations (fly ash and borosilicate in mixtures of 70-30 wt% and 30-70 wt%, respectively) and physical ...

Use of depot medroxyprogesterone acetate and fracture risk [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Depot medroxyprogesterone acetate (DMPA), which has a high rate of use among teenagers in Europe and the United States, has been associated with impaired bone mineral acquisition during adolescence and accelerated bone loss in later life.

Is Young's Modulus a Critical Coating Property Determining Fouling‐Release Performance of Marine Coatings?

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
The release of foulers from protective marine coatings is determined by several interrelated material properties, including the strength of Young's modulus, the flexibility of chain segments, the surface free energy, and the magnitude of hydrodynamic stress.

Correlates of calcaneal quantitative ultrasound parameters in patients with diabetes: the study on the assessment of determinants of muscle and bone strength abnormalities in diabetes [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
OBJECTIVE: Quantitative ultrasound (QUS) provides an estimate of bone mineral density (BMD) and also evaluates bone quality, which has been related to increased fracture risk in people with diabetes.
