Solid‐State Diffusion and Intermetallic Phase Formation in Roll‐Bonded Mg–Zn Composites With Kirigami‐Patterned Inlay

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Mg–Zn composites with a thickness of 0.21 mm were fabricated using roll bonding of a kirigami‐patterned Mg alloy inlay within a Zn matrix. Thermal activation following this process led to the formation of tailored intermetallic structures, which provided the composite with enhanced flexural strength.

Fracture Energy and Fracture Morphology after Three-Point Bending Test of Welded Joints Made of Cast Steel Designed for Use in Power Sector, with and without the Addition of Rare Earth Metals

open access: yesMetals, 2018
The paper reports the three-point bending test results of welded joints. The joints were made of chromium-molybdenum cast steel designed for the use at elevated temperatures. TIG (tungsten inert gas) welding technique was used.

Interlaminar fracture toughness: Three-dimensional finite element modeling for end-notch and mixed-mode flexure [PDF]

open access: yes
A computational procedure is described for evaluating End-Notch-Flexure (ENF) and Mixed-Mode-Flexure (MMF) interlaminar fracture toughness in unidirectional fiber composites.

Phase Field Failure Modeling: Brittle‐Ductile Dual‐Phase Microstructures under Compressive Loading

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
The approach by Amor and the approach by Miehe and Zhang for asymmetric damage behavior in the phase field method for fracture are compared regarding their fitness for microcrack‐based failure modeling. The comparison is performed for the case of a dual‐phase microstructure with a brittle and a ductile constituent.

Effect of brass-alloy machining-swarf additive on the microstructure, hardness and toughness of gray cast iron

open access: yesScientific Reports
In this study, the effects of brass machining swarf with different weight percentages on cast iron were investigated. The addition of 1 wt% swarf resulted in a refinement of Type A and E graphite morphologies and an increase in the volume fraction of ...
