Hands-On Exercise in Environmental Structural Geology Using a Fracture Block Model

Journal of Geoscience Education, 2001
A scale analog model of an actual fractured rock reservoir was developed to demonstrate the relative utility of structural methods in predicting groundwater flow directions. Students performed several standard structural analyses directly on the fracture block rather than paper copies of fracture maps as in standard exercises.

A theory of fracture of materials and its application to geology

Transactions, American Geophysical Union, 1950
A theory of fracture of materials is developed which encompasses shear and tension failure. The probability of fracture occurring across a given surface element in an isotropic medium is assumed to be a general function of the limiting normal and tangential stresses across that element. A modification is later introduced to allow for anisotropy wherein

The axial cleavage fracture 1 Axial cleavage fracturing, a significant process in mining and geology

Engineering Geology, 1965
Abstract The attention is called to the systematic occurrence of fracturing in brittle rock parallel to the major load axis at triaxial differential compressive loading. The axial fracture plane shows the features of the tensile brittle ( cleavage) fracture; this circumstance has led to the nomenclature “axial cleavage fracture”.

AI-Driven Geology-Engineering Workflow for Hydraulic Fracture Evaluation with GPU Acceleration

SPE Reservoir Simulation Conference
Abstract This study introduces an AI-integrated geology-engineering workflow for efficiently and accurately determining the ratio of effective fractures to hydraulic fractures in unconventional reservoirs. The workflow combines a boundary element-based hydraulic fracture simulator with a GPU-accelerated reservoir simulator using the ...

Study of Geology-Engineering Integration Fracturing Design Based on Material Point Method

2021
Due to terrestrial deposited, the tight-oil-reservoir in North Songliao Basin has strong heterogeneity. In view of this characteristic, this paper studied on geology-engineering integration based on material point method, and confirmed reasonable parameters and fracturing models, to increase the efficiency of volume fracturing.

Behaviour of fractures in hard rocks — A study by surface geology and radial VES method

Geoexploration, 1983
Abstract In hard rock terrain the exploration of groundwater is essentially the detection of thick weathered residuum or of zones of intense jointing and fracturing and hence is extremely complex. The present study incorporates the radial vertical electrical sounding (VES) method in understanding the behaviour of rock fracturing at shallow depths in ...
