Quantized fracture mechanics [PDF]

open access: yesPhilosophical Magazine, 2004
A new energy-based theory, quantized fracture mechanics (QFM), is presented that modifies continuum-based fracture mechanics; stress- and strain-based QFM analogs are also proposed. The differentials in Griffith's criterion are substituted with finite differences; the implications are remarkable.

Multiscale simulation of injection-induced fracture slip and wing-crack propagation in poroelastic media [PDF]

open access: yes, 2021
In fractured poroelastic media under high differential stress, the shearing of fractures and faults and the corresponding propagation of wing cracks can be induced by fluid injection. Focusing on low-pressure stimulation with fluid pressures below the minimum principal stress but above the threshold required to overcome the fracture's frictional ...

FRACTURE MECHANICS [PDF]

open access: yesThe Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery. British volume, 1961
1. Linear fractures of the shaft of the long bones are divided into four basic types: 1) transverse; 2) oblique transverse; 3) spiral; and 4) oblique. 2. The mode of production of these fractures is deduced on the grounds of simple mechanical theory: 1) transverse fractures are a result of angulation; 2) oblique transyerse are the result of ...

Dynamic Fracture Criteria Evaluation of Bridge Structural Steel

open access: yesThe Baltic Journal of Road and Bridge Engineering, 2011
J-integral is the main effective and commonly used tool for elastic-plastic cracked material resistance assessment. Considering ductile behavior of bridges steel integral approach is suitable for fracture toughness evaluation.

Fracture Behavior of Two Biopolymers Containing Notches: Effects of Notch Tip Plasticity

open access: yesApplied Sciences, 2020
This paper analyzes the notch effect on the fracture behavior of two biomaterials (a brittle bone cement and a ductile dental material) under mode I loading. U-notched Brazilian disk (UNBD) specimens of both materials were tested under remote compression,
