Three-dimensional effects on cracked discs and plates under nominal Mode III loading

open access: yesFracture and Structural Integrity, 2015
The existence of three-dimensional effects at cracks has been known for many years, but understanding has been limited, and for some situations still is.

Dynamic Micromechanical Characterization of 3D Printed Bone In Vitro Models Manufactured via Vat Photopolymerization

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This study presents a novel approach to designing and fabricating high‐porosity 3D‐printed scaffolds using a customized resin. Scaffold geometry, cellular interactions, and mechanical properties are analyzed to demonstrate these engineered bone models.

Material Composition Gradient Controls the Autonomous Opening of Banksia Seed Pods in Fire‐Prone Habitats

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
The seed pod valves of Australian Banksia attenuata plants are not simply bi‐layers which bend when dry. These experiments and models reveal complex mechanics, which allow seed release only after several steps of seed pod opening. Stiffness gradients prevent delamination of the valves during loading, and a shape‐memory function protects the seeds ...

Towards Cross-Scale Attention and Surface Supervision for Fractured Bone Segmentation in CT [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv
Bone segmentation is an essential step for the preoperative planning of fracture trauma surgery. The automated segmentation of fractured bone from computed tomography (CT) scans remains challenging, due to the large differences of fractures in position and morphology, and also the inherent anatomical characteristics of different bone structures.
