Roughness of fracture surfaces [PDF]

open access: yesEurophysics Letters (EPL), 2000
We study the fracture surface of three dimensional samples through a model for quasi-static fractures known as Born Model. We find for the roughness exponent a value of 0.5 expected for ``small length scales'' in microfracturing experiments. Our simulations confirm that at small length scales the fracture can be considered as quasi-static. The isotropy

Anomalous roughness of fracture surfaces in 2D fuse models [PDF]

open access: yesInternational Journal of Fracture, 2008
We study anomalous scaling and multiscaling of two-dimensional crack profiles in the random fuse model using both periodic and open boundary conditions. Our large scale and extensively sampled numerical results reveal the importance of crack branching and coalescence of microcracks, which induce jumps in the solid-on-solid crack profiles.

Hydrodynamic descriptions for surface roughness in fracture front propagation [PDF]

open access: yesPhilosophical Transactions of the Royal Society A: Mathematical, Physical and Engineering Sciences, 2018
Fracture is ubiquitous in a crystalline material. Inspired by the observed phenomenological similarities between the spatial profile of a fractured surface and velocities in hydrodynamic turbulence, we set up a hydrodynamic description for the dynamics of fracture surface propagation mode I or opening fracture front.

Surface Roughness and Fracture Strength of Heat-pressed Lithium Disilicate Veneers using Different Surface Treatments: An In Vitro Study [PDF]

open access: yesInternational Journal of Prosthodontics and Restorative Dentistry
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) as an etching agent following phosphoric acid (PA) and hydrofluoric acid (HF) etching on the fracture strength and surface roughness of lithium disilicate ...

Measurement of Coal Fracture Surface Roughness.

open access: yesShigen-to-Sozai, 1991
In this paper, the fracture surface roughness of coal samples from the four coal mines in Hokkaido was measured and analyzed. The main results obtained are summarized as follows:(1) The surface of the coal fracture is a random surface varying in some places smooth and others jagged.

Experimental and numerical studies on non-Darcian flow in single rough-walled rock fracture

open access: yesYantu gongcheng xuebao, 2023
A series of rough-walled rock fracture specimens with specific surface roughnesses are made by using the three- dimensional carving. After that, the self-designed apparatus which can quantitatively change the aperture of single rock fracture is adopted ...

Roughness Scaling of Fracture Surfaces in Polycrystalline Materials [PDF]

open access: yesMRS Proceedings, 2004
AbstractThe roughness scaling of fracture surfaces in two-dimensional grain boundary networks is stud- ied numerically. Grain boundary networks are created using a Metropolis method in order to mimic the triple junction distributions from experiments.

Influence of multiscale surface roughness on permeability in fractures

open access: yesPhysical Review Fluids, 2022
We systematically study the role of surface roughness in fluid flow through rough fractures using direct numerical simulations. Random rough fractal surfaces are generated with different relative roughness, which are then decomposed using the wavelet analysis method.

Roughness of oxide glass subcritical fracture surfaces [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of the American Ceramic Society, 2017
Abstract An original setup combining a very stable loading stage, an atomic force microscope and an environmental chamber, allows to obtain very stable subcritical fracture propagation in oxide glasses under controlled environment, and subsequently to finely characterize the nanometric roughness properties of the ...
