Studies on the behavior of the roughness of the fracture surfaces of silica glass

Abstract Roughness of the fracture surfaces of silica glass samples subjected to thermal treatments under an oxygen-enriched atmosphere was measured by using a fractal-like approach. The results show a clear dependence of the type of treatment upon the resulting fractal dimension. An atomistic model for this phenomenon is proposed.
