Fracture toughness of compact bone
Journal of Biomechanics, 1976The tensile fracture stress (σfr) of longitudinal bovine tibia compact bone specimens was measured as a function of the length (c) and radius of curvature (r) of machined edge cracks. It was established that, for a given value of r, then σFr = Ac −12 − B where A and B are constants.

Fracture toughness testing is a new approach to measuring the specific conditions under which low-ductility fracture will take place as a result of a crack developing in an elastic stress field. It appears to be independent of the type of crack growth. The development of fracture-toughness test procedures is reviewed, and the areas of current interest ...

Fracture toughness is an indication of the resistance of a material to physical separation by a process of unstable macrocrack propagation. Conceptually, it is an intrinsic material parameter that should not vary with changes in specimen size, speed of loading, temperature, etc.

Fracture Toughness Correlations
2016Optimistically, mode I (1) plane-strain fracture toughness (K IC ) from the theory of linear-elastic fracture mechanics (LEFM) and (2) critical J-integral (J IC ) as per elastic-plastic fracture mechanics (EPFM) theory are properties determined in a laboratory. Hence, K IC and J IC data sets can be used in practical designing procedures.

Analysis of fracture toughness data
Lifetime Data Analysis, 1995In studies of the fracture toughness of irradiated weld metal, specimens are subjected to an increasing load. The test on any one specimen might be terminated by choice or because the specimen ruptures. Prior to termination, ductile tearing might or might not have occurred. The situation is thus basically one of competing risks, with different types of

To apply the theory developed in the previous chapters, fracture toughness values must be measured. A wealth of methods for the determination of critical values of the stress intensity factor, R-curve, energy release rate have been developed. A number of these fracture toughness test methods are described here.

Fracture Toughness Calculations
2005As previously mentioned in connection with Eq 6, fracture toughness is first determined using the elastic-plastic J-integral corresponding to the point of cleavage instability. Then Eq 6 is used to convert the result into units of stress intensity factor. J-integral is separated into two parts, specifically an elastic component and a plastic component:
