Nanofibril-mediated Fracture Resistance of Bone [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2020
Natural hard composites like human bone possess a combination of strength and toughness that exceeds that of their constituents and of many engineered composites. This augmentation is attributed to their complex hierarchical structure, spanning multiple length scales; in bone, characteristic dimensions range from nanoscale fibrils to microscale ...

Bioresorbable and Wireless Rechargeable Implanted Na‐ion Battery for Temporary Medical Devices

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
An all‐solid‐state bioresorbable Na‐ion battery is developed, composed entirely of bio‐eliminable materials. In vivo and ex vivo tests confirmed harmless disintegration of this implanted battery. Lifetime of the implanted battery can be precisely controlled by adjusting the dissolvable encapsulation layer's thickness.

Inter-trabecular bone formation: a specific mechanism for healing of cancellous bone: A narrative review

open access: yesActa Orthopaedica, 2016
Background and purpose — Studies of fracture healing have mainly dealt with shaft fractures, both experimentally and clinically. In contrast, most patients have metaphyseal fractures.

Dynamic Micromechanical Characterization of 3D Printed Bone In Vitro Models Manufactured via Vat Photopolymerization

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This study presents a novel approach to designing and fabricating high‐porosity 3D‐printed scaffolds using a customized resin. Scaffold geometry, cellular interactions, and mechanical properties are analyzed to demonstrate these engineered bone models.

Mesenchymal Stem Cells‐Derived Extracellular Vesicles Mimetics as Osteoinductive Mediators for Bone Healing

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Mesenchymal stem cell‐derived nanoghosts (MSC‐NGs) mimic naturally secreted extracellular vesicles (MSC‐EVs) in structure and physicochemical properties but can be synthesized at more translatable yields. As osteogenic agents, MSC‐NGs demonstrate superior outcomes compared to MSC‐EVs.

Pharmacological Topics of Bone Metabolism: Recent Advances in Pharmacological Management of Osteoporosis

open access: yesJournal of Pharmacological Sciences, 2008
The prevention of osteoporotic fracture is an essential socioeconomical priority, especially in the developed countries including Japan. Estrogen, selective estrogen-receptor modulators (SERMs), and bisphosphonate are potent inhibitors of bone resorption;

Inroads Toward Robot-Assisted Internal Fixation of Bone Fractures Using a Bendable Medical Screw and the Curved Drilling Technique [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2018
Internal fixation is a common orthopedic procedure in which a rigid screw is used to fix fragments of a fractured bone together and expedite the healing process. However, the rigidity of the screw, geometry of the fractured anatomy (e.g. femur and pelvis), and patient age can cause an array of complications during screw placement, such as improper ...

Controlling fracture cascades through twisting and quenching [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Fracture limits the structural stability of macroscopic and microscopic materials, from beams and bones to microtubules and nanotubes. Despite recent progress, fracture control continues to present profound practical and theoretical challenges. A famous longstanding problem posed by Feynman asks why brittle elastic rods appear almost always to fragment
