Forest bird diversity increases with fragmentation per se in landscapes following forest gains

open access: yesJournal of Applied Ecology, Volume 63, Issue 1, January 2026.
Our results suggest that, at least for forest breeding birds, the benefits of habitat restoration to increase total forest area could be enhanced by distributing a given amount of restored habitat across multiple patches. Our study also highlights the overarching importance of habitat amount for biodiversity conservation. Taken together, these findings

Rainforest Fragmentation Decreases the Robustness of Plant‐Frugivore Interaction Networks

open access: yesBiotropica, Volume 57, Issue 4, July 2025.
Our study in northern Costa Rica found that larger forest fragments and greater forest cover boost frugivore species richness and strengthen the modularity and robustness of plant–frugivore networks, with three tanager species serving as key species. Consequently, conserving these species and maintaining larger, contiguous forest areas is essential for

High soil moisture triggers negative plant–soil feedbacks in a tropical forest

open access: yesFunctional Ecology, Volume 39, Issue 6, Page 1469-1482, June 2025.
Read the free Plain Language Summary for this article on the Journal blog. Abstract Plant‐microbial interactions help stabilize coexistence and shape ecological communities. These interactions are sensitive to abiotic conditions, but how they may be affected by environmental change is unknown.

Conservation and management implications of the effects of wildfire on a threatened Eastern Iberian Reed Bunting (Emberiza schoeniclus witherbyi) population

open access: yesIbis, Volume 167, Issue 1, Page 196-211, January 2025.
Wetland degradation worldwide has led to fragmentation and isolation of diminished populations that are now more vulnerable to disturbance. Wildfires affecting wetlands can have major impacts on vegetation structure and associated waterbird communities, but rapid recovery of the initial state of vegetation cover after fire due to fast emergent ...
