Hematocrit and left ventricular mass: the Framingham Heart study

open access: yesJournal of the American College of Cardiology, 2004
The goal of this study was to investigate the relationship between hematocrit (Hct) and left ventricular mass index (LVMI) and LV hypertrophy (LVH) in subjects without known hypertension or cardiovascular disease in the Framingham Heart study.Anemia may be an independent risk factor for cardiovascular disease in the general population.

Association of Epigenetic Age Acceleration and Mitochondrial DNA‐Based Aging Metrics Provides Insights Into Mechanisms of Aging‐Related Diseases

open access: yesAging Cell, EarlyView.
Older participants exhibit lower mtDNA copy number (CN) and a higher rare heteroplasmy burden, while common heteroplasmy burden remains relatively stable. Higher epigenetic age acceleration is associated with lower mtDNA CN and higher rare heteroplasmy burden in 6316 participants.

Whole blood gene expression and white matter Hyperintensities

open access: yesMolecular Neurodegeneration, 2017
Background White matter hyperintensities (WMH) are an important biomarker of cumulative vascular brain injury and have been associated with cognitive decline and an increased risk of dementia, stroke, depression, and gait impairments. The pathogenesis of

Evidence of widespread selection on standing variation in Europe at height-associated SNPs. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Strong signatures of positive selection at newly arising genetic variants are well documented in humans(1-8), but this form of selection may not be widespread in recent human evolution(9).

Cardiovascular Health in Women—Across the Lifespan

open access: yesClinical Endocrinology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Cardiovascular disease (CVD) remains the leading cause of mortality and morbidity among women worldwide. However, CVD continues to be perceived as a predominantly male issue. CVD in women therefore remains understudied, underrecognized and undertreated.

Relations Between Aortic Stiffness and Left Ventricular Mechanical Function in the Community

open access: yesJournal of the American Heart Association: Cardiovascular and Cerebrovascular Disease, 2017
BackgroundAortic stiffness impairs optimal ventricular–vascular coupling and left ventricular systolic function, particularly in the long axis. Left ventricular global longitudinal strain (GLS) has recently emerged as a sensitive measure of early cardiac

Tirzepatide and the 10‐year predicted risk of cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes in adults with obesity and prediabetes: A post hoc analysis from the three‐year SURMOUNT‐1 trial

open access: yesDiabetes, Obesity and Metabolism, EarlyView.
Abstract Aim We assessed the association between tirzepatide and the 10‐year predicted risk of developing cardiovascular disease (CVD) and type 2 diabetes (T2D) among three‐year SURMOUNT‐1 trial participants. Materials and Methods This post hoc analysis applied validated risk engines that predict 10‐year CVD (atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease ...

The genetics of platelet count and volume in humans

open access: yesPlatelets, 2018
The last decade has witnessed an explosion in the depth, variety, and amount of human genetic data that can be generated. This revolution in technical and analytical capacities has enabled the genetic investigation of human traits and disease in ...

Association of Variability in Body Mass Index and Metabolic Health With Cardiometabolic Disease Risk

open access: yesJournal of the American Heart Association: Cardiovascular and Cerebrovascular Disease, 2019
Background Metabolic syndrome is associated with high risk of cardiovascular disease, although risk may differ according to the specific conditions present and variability in those conditions. Methods and Results We defined obesity (body mass index [BMI]

The Epidemiology of Congestive Heart Failure: Contributions from the Framingham Heart Study

open access: yesGlobal Heart, 2013
SummaryIn 1971, McKee et al. at the Framingham Heart Study published a seminal paper on the epidemiology of congestive heart failure. The authors proposed a set of standardized criteria for heart failure for use in research studies and described the risk factors for developing heart failure.
