Is he (or she) a successful pillar of society, wealthy and respected, or a lying charlatan, claiming all sorts of unbelievable cures and treatments. Were they specialists or was dentistry a sideline for some other trade or profession? This chapter discusses the evidence from France.

La profession d’orthophoniste est encore largement meconnue. Existant officiellement depuis 1964, l’orthophonie est nee de la necessite de prendre en charge les enfants operes de « becs-de-lievre ». Tres vite, l’interet pour les troubles de l’articulation et de la parole s’est elargi a ceux de la voix, du langage oral et ecrit, puis de la communication.
