Unlocking ecological insights from sub‐seasonal visible‐to‐shortwave infrared imaging spectroscopy: The SHIFT campaign

open access: yesEcosphere, Volume 16, Issue 3, March 2025.
Abstract We stand at the threshold of a transformative era in Earth observation, marked by space‐borne visible‐to‐shortwave infrared (VSWIR) imaging spectrometers that promise consistent global observations of ecosystem function, phenology, and inter‐ and intra‐annual change.

Conceptualizing River Floodplains

open access: yesEarth's Future, Volume 13, Issue 3, March 2025.
Abstract Geologic, geomorphic, hydrologic, ecological, and biogeochemical conceptual models of river floodplains developed since the mid‐20th century led to the current conceptualization of floodplains as integrative systems that store and transform diverse materials, provide a source of material that can be transported downstream, and function as ...

Urbanized stream restoration as designed adaptation: Planning using synthetic digital rivers and form variation assessment

open access: yesRiver Research and Applications, Volume 41, Issue 2, Page 268-284, February 2025.
Abstract Restoring urbanized streams is challenging because of the absence of natural reference reaches and major changes in discharge and sediment supply as a consequence of catchment urbanization. In many cases the risk to urban infrastructure leads to form‐based restoration with less opportunity for process‐based approaches.

An inter‐laboratory comparison of soil organic carbon analysis on a farm with four agricultural management systems

open access: yesAgronomy Journal, Volume 117, Issue 1, January/February 2025.
Abstract Soil organic carbon (SOC) as a key soil health indicator is integral to the soil's capacity to function as a vital living ecosystem that sustains plants, animals, and humans. Accurate SOC estimation is essential to decision‐making for an increasing number of stakeholders, such as farmers, industry professionals, and policymakers, to determine ...

Evaluating the impact of fertilizer and crop prices on phosphorus concentrations in Great Lakes watersheds

open access: yesJournal of the Agricultural and Applied Economics Association, Volume 3, Issue 4, Page 756-773, December 2024.
Abstract Crop and input prices affect agricultural production and water pollution. Fertilizer prices fluctuated over the past two decades, recently increasing substantially. Corn prices also increased after authorization of the Renewable Fuel Standard. This paper estimates the effect of fertilizer and corn prices on total phosphorus (TP) and dissolved ...

Assessing experimental silvicultural treatments enhancing structural complexity in a central European forest – BEAST time‐series analysis based on Sentinel‐1 and Sentinel‐2

open access: yesRemote Sensing in Ecology and Conservation, Volume 10, Issue 4, Page 531-550, August 2024.
Monitoring forest structure complexity is essential to ensure forest resilience due to increasing pressures of global warming, biodiversity loss and disturbances. Spaceborne remote sensing time‐series enable continuous monitoring of forest conditions and are integrated in the present study for the assessment of various deadwood structures and light ...

Environmental DNA metabarcoding reveals temporal dynamics but functional stability of arthropod communities in cattle dung

open access: yesJournal of Animal Ecology, Volume 93, Issue 8, Page 1003-1021, August 2024.
The study shows temporal dynamics of invertebrate succession in cattle dung by a multi‐taxon approach. Functional redundancy was found within groups of beetles and flies important for dung decomposition, suggesting functional stability and resilience in the system.

Guidance to best tools and practices for systematic reviews

open access: yesBritish Journal of Pharmacology, Volume 181, Issue 1, Page 180-210, January 2024.
Data continue to accumulate indicating that many systematic reviews are methodologically flawed, biased, redundant, or uninformative. Some improvements have occurred in recent years based on empirical methods research and standardization of appraisal tools; however, many authors do not routinely or consistently apply these updated methods. In addition,
