Flow-Induced Fatigue Damage of Large Francis Turbines Under Multiple Operating Loads

open access: yesApplied Sciences
The Francis runner is a critical component of the Francis turbine generator unit, playing a central role in converting water energy into rotating mechanical energy that drives the generator in hydropower stations.

Design optimization method for Francis turbine

open access: yesIOP Conference Series: Earth and Environmental Science, 2014
This paper presents a design optimization system coupled CFD. Optimization algorithm of the system employs particle swarm optimization (PSO). Blade shape design is carried out in one kind of NURBS curve defined by a series of control points. The system was applied for designing the stationary vanes and the runner of higher specific speed francis ...

Flow Field Analysis of Francis Turbine Draft Tube using POD at Design and Part Load Operating Conditions [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Applied Fluid Mechanics
The hydraulic turbines, especially Francis turbines, frequently run at part load (PL) conditions to meet the dynamic energy needs. The flow field at the runner exit changes significantly with a change in the operating point.

Numerical Study on Flow Characteristics in a Francis Turbine during Load Rejection

open access: yesEnergies, 2019
Labyrinth seals are not usually included in the numerical models of hydraulic machinery to simplify the geometric modeling, and thereby reduce the calculation burden.

Testing and Numerical Analysis of Abnormal Pressure Pulsations in Francis Turbines

open access: yesEnergies
During the flood season, Francis turbines often operate under low-head and full-load conditions, frequently experiencing significant pressure pulsations, posing potential threats to the safe and stable operation of the units.

Steady Flow Analysis of Francis Turbine

open access: yesJournal of Mechanical Engineering, 2009
The flow features are presented on different openings in Francis turbine by unsteady numerical simulation. The unsteady flow results are as follows:when the opening is 12 mm, pressure fluctuation at runner outlet near hub is not obvious and pressure fluctuation amplitudes near midstream and shroud are bigger.

CFD Numerical simulations of Francis turbines

open access: yesRevista Facultad de Ingeniería Universidad de Antioquia, 2013
In this paper the description of the internal flow in a Francis turbine is addressed from a numerical point of view. The simulation methodology depends on the objectives. On the one hand, steady simulations are able to provide the hill chart of the turbine and energetic losses in its components.

Comprehensive Hydraulic Improvement and Parametric Analysis of a Francis Turbine Runner

open access: yesEnergies, 2019
Hydraulic turbines are usually required to operate in a wide range. The operation at off-design conditions not only reduces the unit efficiency, but also significantly deteriorates the dynamic stability of the turbines.

Modelling and Internal Fuzzy Model Power Control of a Francis Water Turbine

open access: yesEnergies, 2014
This paper presents dynamic modelling of a Francis turbine with a surge tank and the control of a hydro power plant (HPP). Non-linear and linear models include technical parameters and show high similarity to measurement data.
