Summary Peri‐operative SARS‐CoV‐2 infection increases postoperative mortality. The aim of this study was to determine the optimal duration of planned delay before surgery in patients who have had SARS‐CoV‐2 infection. This international, multicentre, prospective cohort study included patients undergoing elective or emergency surgery during October 2020.

This secondary analysis of an international prospective multicentre observational study demonstrates significant variation in the proportion of patients receiving an end stoma after left‐sided colorectal resection between high‐ and low–middle‐income countries; this cannot be accounted for by case mix alone.

Pooled analysis of WHO Surgical Safety Checklist use and mortality after emergency laparotomy. [PDF]
WHO Surgical Safety checklist use in emergency laparotomy was associated with a significantly lower perioperative mortality, yet its use in low‐HDI countries was half that of high‐HDI countries. The greatest absolute gains may be made by focusing patient safety programmes in emergency settings in low‐ and middle‐HDI countries.
