Artificial Intelligence and Access to Justice at the ‘Shop Front’: The Potential and Limitations of Meeting Legal Need Through Technology

open access: yesAustralian Journal of Social Issues, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT In Australia, governments fund Community Legal Centres (CLCs) as part of the legal assistance sector (LAS) to meet the ‘legal needs’ of people experiencing disadvantage who cannot afford private legal services. Persistent unmet demand for CLCs is well‐documented. As artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly used in private legal practice to

Strategies for inducing diabetes in laboratory animals: Advances from chemical, surgical, immunologic, dietary, and genetic approaches

open access: yesAnimal Models and Experimental Medicine, EarlyView.
This review summarizes the principal experimental approaches used to induce diabetes in animal models. Strategies include chemical agents (streptozotocin, alloxan, dithizone, gold thioglucose), dietary interventions (high‐fat and high‐sugar diets), surgical methods (total or partial pancreatectomy), genetic models (db/db, ob/ob, Goto‐Kakizaki [GK ...

Creative Destruction versus Robert Frank's Progressive Consumption Tax

open access: yesQuarterly Journal of Austrian Economics
Joseph Schumpeter, like Ludwig von Mises, thought of capitalism as a process that often, over time, turned luxuries into necessities. Schumpeter warned that assessments that ignored this process, which he termed creative destruction, would misconstrue ...

Diabetes and the Metabolic Syndrome as Drivers of Neurodegeneration: Convergent Mechanisms Linking Peripheral Neuropathy and Dementia

open access: yesAnnals of Neurology, EarlyView.
The metabolic syndrome, a state of progressive metabolic dysfunction, injures the peripheral and central nervous systems, promoting peripheral neuropathy (PN) and cognitive impairment (CI), respectively. We posit PN and CI are connected in the metabolic syndrome framework, built on the premise that neurons, whether in the peripheral or central nervous ...

Zähmung eines blauen Gases—Struktur und Chemie von Hexafluorthioaceton

open access: yesAngewandte Chemie, EarlyView.

Taming a Blue Gas—Structure and Chemistry of Hexafluorothioacetone

open access: yesAngewandte Chemie International Edition, EarlyView.
Hexafluorothioacetone (1), a blue gas at r.t., was synthesized by flash vacuum pyrolysis of its cyclic dimer at 660°C. We discuss fundamental properties of elusive 1, including single‐crystal structure and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, despite its tendency to dimerize even at –74°C.

Pan‐Frying Conditions Affect the Tocopherol Intake From Edible Oils: Results From Temperature Measurements and the Standardized Heating of an Edible Oil

open access: yesJournal of the American Oil Chemists' Society, EarlyView.
High temperatures in a short time on electric stoves in private homes. Fast loss of tocochromanols using standardized conditions and a miniature heating apparatus. ABSTRACT Tocochromanols (vitamin E compounds) are essential ingredients in human nutrition. Their consumption via edible oils is considered the main source of dietary intake.

Skeletal pathologies in extant crocodilians as a window into the paleopathology of fossil archosaurs

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, EarlyView.
Abstract Crocodilians, together with birds, are the only extant relatives to many extinct archosaur groups, making them highly important for interpreting paleopathological conditions in a phylogenetic disease bracketing model. Despite this, comprehensive data on osteopathologies in crocodilians remain scarce.
