Alpha-Gal Allergy: a new threat to Appalachia

open access: yesMarshall Journal of Medicine, 2021
Alpha-gal allergy, or mammalian meat allergy, is described as the development of IgE antibodies to the oligosaccharide galactose-a-1,3-galactose following a bite from the tick species Amblyomma americanum (Lone Star tick) or Dermacentor variabillis (Wood

An elementary proof of Franks' lemma for geodesic flows [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Given a Riemannian manifold $(M,g)$ and a geodesic $\gamma$, the perpendicular part of the derivative of the geodesic flow $\phi_g^t: SM \rightarrow SM$ along $\gamma$ is a linear symplectic map. We give an elementary proof of the following Franks' lemma,

Zero entropy subgroups of mapping class groups

open access: yes, 2016
Let $M$ be a compact surface with boundary. We are interested in the question of how a group action on $M$ permutes a finite invariant set $X \subset int(M)$.

From Sample to Mixed Reality: A Translational 3D MALDI Imaging Platform for Advanced 3D Spatial Omics Analysis of 3D Cell Culture Disease Models

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
A comprehensive technology platform enables high‐fidelity, volumetric MALDI imaging of 3D cell cultures by integrating custom embedding molds, a semi‐automated computational framework for 3D reconstruction, voxel‐instead of pixel‐based biomarker discovery, and immersive mixed reality data exploration.

Effectiveness of Pre‐Transplant Dual GLP‐1 Receptor Agonist and SGLT2 Inhibitor Therapy on All‐Cause Mortality in Organ Transplantation Candidates with Obesity and Type 2 Diabetes: a Target‐Trial Emulation

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
This target trial emulation in solid organ transplant candidates with obesity and type 2 diabetes evaluates whether pre‐transplant dual therapy with GLP‐1 receptor agonists plus SGLT2 inhibitors is associated with post‐transplant mortality and kidney graft outcomes compared with monotherapy or usual care, using multinational electronic health records ...

A sporting chance for women? Exploring gender imbalance on the sports desks of UK national newspapers [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Sports journalism has traditionally been seen as a male domain, and a number of researchers suggest that this tradition has not changed (Strong, 2007) . Sports reporters in the United Kingdom remain predominantly male, and despite increasingly more women

Addressing Oxygen Embrittlement in Additively Manufactured Titanium via Cu‐Mediated Interstitial Site Engineering

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
A novel “Cu‐mediated interstitial site engineering” strategy is introduced to thermodynamically stabilize hexagonal oxygen (hex‐O) configurations in oxygen‐containing titanium alloys. The hex‐O configuration activates multiple slip systems and enhances dislocation pinning via long‐range repulsion.

Functional similarity in landscape scale SVAT modelling [PDF]

open access: yesHydrology and Earth System Sciences, 1999
In this study, it is shown that the complexity of Soil Vegetation Atmosphere Transfer (SVAT) models leads to an equifinality of functional behaviour - many parameterizations from many areas of the parameter space lead to very similar responses ...
