Teleosemantics and the free energy principle

open access: yesBiology and Philosophy, 2022
AbstractThe free energy principle is notoriously difficult to understand. In this paper, we relate the principle to a framework that philosophers of biology are familiar with: Ruth Millikan’s teleosemantics. We argue that: (i) systems that minimise free energy are systems with a proper function; and (ii) Karl Friston’s notion of implicit modelling can ...

A Psychovisual Quality Metric in Free-Energy Principle

IEEE Transactions on Image Processing, 2012
In this paper, we propose a new psychovisual quality metric of images based on recent developments in brain theory and neuroscience, particularly the free-energy principle. The perception and understanding of an image is modeled as an active inference process, in which the brain tries to explain the scene using an internal generative model.

An Overview of the Free Energy Principle and Related Research

Neural Computation
Abstract The free energy principle and its corollary, the active inference framework, serve as theoretical foundations in the domain of neuroscience, explaining the genesis of intelligent behavior. This principle states that the processes of perception, learning, and decision making—within an agent—are all driven by the objective of ...

Free Energies and the Dissipation Principle

2011
We present in this chapter an axiomatic formulation of thermodynamics in order to introduce free energies in a very general manner and to prove certain fundamental properties of these quantities. For most of the discussion, no underlying model is assumed, in contrast to the previous chapter.

The cost of over-intellectualizing the free-energy principle

Behavioral and Brain Sciences, 2020
Abstract This commentary raises a question about the target article's proposed explanation of what goes on when we think through other minds. It highlights a tension between non-mindreading characterizations of everyday social cognition and the individualist, cognitivist assumptions that target article's explanatory proposal inherits from the ...

Information in the free energy principle of cognition

2023

[The Design Principle of Allostatic Mechanisms: The Free Energy Principle].

Brain and nerve = Shinkei kenkyu no shinpo, 2023
Homeostasis is maintained by neural reflex controls, which attempt to maintain the body's internal organs within a predetermined range. However, when deviations are significant, homeostasis may not be restored by these standard controls. Therefore, a function called allostasis is necessary to maximize the energy efficiency of bodily functions ...

Species of Realization and the Free Energy Principle

Australasian Journal of Philosophy, 2014
This paper examines, for the first time, the relationship between realization relations and the free energy principle in cognitive neuroscience. I argue, firstly, that the free energy principle has ramifications for the wide versus narrow realization distinction: if the free energy principle is correct, then organismic realizers are insufficient for ...
