Qualities of strand cast resulfurized free-machining steels
Journal of Applied Metalworking, 1986The machinability of stran-dcast free-machining steels newly developed jointly by Nippon Steel Corporation and Inland Steel Company is compared to that of ingot-cast steels. The effect on machinability of such metallurgical factors as the size and shape of manganese sulfide inclusions, lead particles, and oxides, that are likely to change as the shift ...

The Anisotropic Cutting Behavior of Free-Machining Steels
Journal of Engineering for Industry, 1975A determination of the anisotropy in the shear strength during machining of a group of free-machining steels including 1117, 11L17, and 1215 and a plain steel, 1018, is presented. The three free-machining steels are anisotropic in the as-received condition, but the nonfree-machining steel is not anisotropic.

Cold extrusion and machinability of free-machining steels
Journal of Materials Processing Technology, 1990Abstract Four types of free-machining (FM) steels were cold extruded and the main forming data (force, pressure) of the extrusion processes were determined. The generation of cracks during and after the extrusion process could be avoided by normalizing, by using tapered slugs and by increasing the mean pressure in the forming zone.

A new Pb-free machinable austenitic stainless steel
Journal of Iron and Steel Research International, 2010Abstract The machinability tests were conducted by using various process parameters on a CA6164 lathe with a dynamometer. The metallurgical properties, machinability and mechanical properties of the developed alloy were compared with those of an austenite stainless steel 1Cr18Ni9Ti.

Development trends and Review of free-machining steels
Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part B: Journal of Engineering Manufacture, 2008This work presents the technologies more widely used to improve the machinability of metal materials, mainly focusing on the free-machining steels. A wide literature and patent review are included with the purpose of presenting the state of the art on free-machining steels.

A New Free-Machining Steel Containing Bismuth and Calcium
Materials Science Forum, 2016The paper presents a new environmentally friendly lead-free free-machining structural steel AVTs19KhGN containing bismuth and calcium. The following quality characteristics of the new steel (in as-cast and forged condition) are determined: mechanical properties; austenite grain size; amount of non-metallic inclusions; surface quality.

Passivation Treatments for Resulfurized, Free Machining Stainless Steels
2009The practical aspects of nitric acid passivation are reviewed and new data on the effect of passivation variables on subsequent corrosion resistance are reported. Solution composition and temperature, passivation time, and double acid and alkaline treatments were investigated.

Microscopy and the Development of Free-Machining Steels
1986Machinability has been studied by engineers for over 75 years, beginning with the significant contributions of F. W. Taylor between 1881 and 1906.1 Since then, the mechanics of metal cutting has been extensively studied, and considerable progress has been made in developing theories of machinability based on a knowledge of mechanical properties.2 ...
