Modelling of a free piston problem
2006We give a qualitative analysis of the free boundary value problem which models the motion of a piston. A basic role is played by a third-order operator, whose properties are used for solving preliminary problems. The differential equations are transformed into a nonlinear Volterra system, which is dealt with by the fixed point theorem.

Motion control of a hydraulic free-piston engine
2012 American Control Conference (ACC), 2012Free-piston engine (FPE), as an alternative of the conventional internal combustion engine, has a high potential in terms of energy saving given its wide range of potential applications and high efficiency. One of the technical barriers that prevents the wide spread of this technology is the lack of precise piston motion control.

SummaryA study of shock tube operation with free-piston compression of the driver gas is presented. It is shown theoretically and experimentally that shock Mach numbers exceeding 30 in air may be obtained with an apparatus of moderate size. The operating limitations imposed by the maximum pressures allowed in the apparatus, by the ratio of the volume ...

SUPERCHARGING in the FREE-PISTON CYCLE
SAE Technical Paper Series, 1959<div class="section abstract"><div class="htmlview paragraph">THE RESULTS of analytical studies backed by actual tests concerning the use of supercharging in the free-piston cycle are reviewed. They indicate that, under conditions of increased cycle pressure ratio and of adequate cooling of the air, supercharging has power possibilities far

Dynamic Characteristics of a Free Piston Compressor
Fluid Power Systems and Technology, 2004The design and dynamic characterization of a free piston compressor is presented in this paper. The free piston compressor is a proposed device that utilizes combustion to compress air into a high-pressure supply tank. The device is configured such that the transduction from thermal energy to stored energy, in the form of compressed gas, is efficient ...

A Review of Free Piston Engine Concepts
SAE Technical Paper Series, 1994<div class="htmlview paragraph">In free piston engines, the stroke of the piston is used directly to produce hydraulic, pneumatic or electric energy. This can be done with a single piston in one combustion chamber, or with more pistons in one or more combustion chambers.

FORD FREE-PISTON ENGINE DEVELOPMENT
SAE Technical Paper Series, 1959<div class="section abstract"><div class="htmlview paragraph">THE Free-Piston Engine Program described in this paper was concerned with determining thermodynamic relationships of small, high-speed engines. The purpose was to establish proper engine geometry and mechanical design which could then be applied to developing larger automotive ...

Large Free-Piston Stirling Engines
1985The word ‘large’ applied to Stirling engines means different things to different people. An engine having a 3 kW output would be large to those working on artificial hearts or cryocoolers for electronic applications. It would be small, negligibly so, to those interested in locomotive propulsion.
