The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 1986A free piston Stirling engine has a hermetic vessel containing a displacer piston and a power piston coupled to each other and to the vessel by gas springs. An additional mass is coupled to the vessel by a gas spring which is tuned to the operating frequency of the engine geometrically.

Dynamic analysis of a simplified free-piston Stirling engine
SIMULATION, 1980Lumped-volume dynamic equations are derived using an energy-state formulation. This technique requires the writing of state functions for kinetic and poten tial energy. A Rayleigh dissipation function accounts for losses in the system. Using these functions, a Lagrangian is formed and the equations of motion for the system are derived.

[1], we have calculated the maximum thermal efficiencies that are theoretically attainable by free-piston Stirling and Carnot engine generators by considering the work loss due to friction and Joule heat.
