Free-Space Optical Interconnects

SPIE Proceedings, 1989
A simple and efficient optical interconnection consisting of only a laser, two lenses, and a detector has been used to connect two high-speed digital circuits separated by over 24 cm. No external laser driver, detector preamplifier, or other interface circuitry was required. The interconnection operates at data rates of 400 Mb/s.

Free-space optical collinear crossover interconnects

Applied Optics, 1991
Two new optical free-space collinear cross-over interconnect schemes are suggested. The first optical implementation uses mirrors and beam splitters, while the second uses a Fresnel zone plate and lens combination. Some proof-of-principle experimental results are also presented.

Diffractive optics applied to free-space optical interconnects

Applied Optics, 1994
The optimum design of free-space optical interconnection systems utilizing diffractive optics is determined from a practical engineering standpoint for systems ranging from space invariant to fully space variant. System volume is calculated in terms of parameters such as the f-number of the diffractive lens, the wavelength of light, and also the total ...

Giga Ethernet Free-Space Passive Optical Networks

Fiber and Integrated Optics, 2008
Fully passive optical networks with wavelength division multiplexing capabilities will open the access network to the real broad band. Integration with optical wireless is a further step to add low-cost characteristics with high bandwidth capabilities.

Free Space Optical Communications Link Budget Estimation

Lasers, Sources and Related Photonic Devices, 2010
This paper describes a new methodology of estimating the free space optical communications link budgets to be expected in conditions of severe turbulence. Comparisons will be given between theory and field measurements.

Telecentric Optics for Free-Space Optical Link

2008 16th IEEE Symposium on High Performance Interconnects, 2008
We describe a telecentric optical system for free-space multichannel optical interconnects. The targeted aggregate data rate is 240 Gb/s. We have a unique implementation of telecentric optics and achieved an optical link that is simple, robust and modular.

Optical interference on free-space optical transceivers

Frontiers in Optics, 2003
We investigate the effects of optical interference on the performance of free-space optical (FSO) network links. Experiments indicate that interfering laser pulses of varying peak power, wavelength, and repetition rate incident upon FSO transceivers can produce up to a 90% reduction of average network throughput.

Bit‐parallel, free‐space, optical communication

Communications on Pure and Applied Mathematics, 1995
AbstractIn this paper, we examine several issues of bit‐parallel free space optical communication such as arbitration operations, fault tolerance, and connector alignment. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Miniaturization of free space optical systems

Applied Optics, 2010
Coherent illumination enables not only integrated optics, but also miniaturized free-space optics that takes advantage of the amplitude and phase control afforded by optical microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) and photonic crystals. These technologies also provide a practical and cost-effective means for integration and packaging of optical systems ...
