A Fully Discrete Adjoint Method for Optimization of Flow Problems on Deforming Domains with Time-Periodicity Constraints [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
A variety of shooting methods for computing fully discrete time-periodic solutions of partial differential equations, including Newton-Krylov and optimization-based methods, are discussed and used to determine the periodic, compressible, viscous flow around a 2D flapping airfoil.

A Bifunctional Fibrous Scaffold Implanted with Amorphous Co2P as both Cathodic and Anodic Stabilizer for High‐Performance Li─S Batteries

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
An amorphous Co2P‐embedded porous carbon nanofiber membrane (A─Co2P/PCNF) via electrospinning/in situ phosphorization is developed to serve as the dual‐electrode stabilizer for Li─S batteries. The amorphization strategy enables more exposed undercoordinated Co sites with optimized d‐band centers, enhanced LiPSs adsorption/catalysis, and lithiophilicity‐

Collective system‐supporting inaction: A conceptual framework of privilege maintenance

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Social Psychology, Volume 52, Issue 7, Page 1128-1142, December 2022., 2022
Abstract Recent protest movements such as #MeToo exposed that institutional change initiatives targeting harassment and discrimination have so far failed to achieve equity. We propose that this is because such policy initiatives fail to account for the motivation of those privileged by inequality regimes to maintain and perpetuate these systems ...

Reconstruction of Partial Hypopharyngeal Defects following Total Laryngectomy:A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis [PDF]

open access: yes
Background: Various operative techniques exist to reconstruct partial hypopharyngeal defects following total laryngectomy. The current study aimed to investigate and compare complications and functional results following commonly used reconstructive ...

Evidence of nutritional vascular formation from the “nutrient flap” in a patient with no-option chronic limb-threatening ischemia: An indocyanine green fluorescence imaging study

open access: yesJournal of Vascular Surgery Cases and Innovative Techniques, 2022
The concept of a “nutrient flap,” in which ischemic tissue is nourished by a transferred well-perfused flap, has been advocated for use since the early days of free flap procedures.

Added costs of insect-scale flapping flight in unsteady airflows [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2016
The aerial environment in the operating domain of small-scale natural and artificial flapping wing fliers is highly complex, unsteady and generally turbulent. Considering flapping flight in an unsteady wind environment with a periodically varying lateral velocity component, we show that body rotations experienced by flapping wing fliers result in the ...

Flutter of a Flag [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2004
We give an explanation for the onset of wind-induced flutter in a flag. Our theory accounts for the various physical mechanisms at work: the finite length and the small but finite bending stiffness of the flag, the unsteadiness of the flow, the added mass effect and vortex shedding from the trailing edge.

Therapeutic hand-exercising device with cycling pressure value [PDF]

open access: yes, 1974
Device exercises hands of persons whose fingers are generally straight and need to be flexed inward toward palms of hands. Device is extremely simple in design, which reduces costs, and fits all hand sizes.

Repair of a wide lower extremity defect with cross-leg free transfer of latissimus dorsi and serratus anterior combined flap: a case report [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Composite tissue loss in extremities involving neurovascular structures has been a major challenge for reconstructive surgeons. Reconstruction of large defects can only be achieved with microsurgical procedures.
